Council will meet on filling vacant seat

The Henderson City Council will meet in a special session on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 to consider a resolution on a procedure to fill the vacant Ward 1 ward seat left open by the death of member Mary Emma Evans last month.

The proposed resolution defines a process the council will follow in order to make an appointment to the empty seat by March 14, 2011.

Assuming the resolution is passed in its present form at the February 8 meeting, the council will then solicit letters of interest in local media and on its web site for its seat. Applicants must be residents of Ward 1, be eighteen years of age or older, be United States citizens, not be convicted felons, and have full voting rights. Those letters of interest will be forwarded to the council.

A special meeting would then be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Henderson Municipal Building at 134 Rose Avenue to interview applicants to the council. The meeting would be public and held in open session, but the public will not be permitted to participate or comment.

During the regular meeting on March 14, 2011, the mayor will ask for nominations. The council will then vote by paper ballot if there is more than one nominee. The nominee who receives a simple majority of the vote will be sworn into office during the regular council meeting on March 28, 2011.
