On yesterday’s open line MS relayed a sad tale of someone wanting to adopt from the Vance County Animal Shelter, however the animal they wanted to adobt was put down early the next day before they realized it. I recently adopted 3 cats from there about 3 weeks or so ago for my family and everyone at the shelter was very nice to us the entire visit. We worked with Gail who sincerely wanted to get these animals out of the shelter to a good home. There is an association called Adovocates for Vance County Shelter Animals that tries very hard every day to arrange for temporary homes for at risk animals, providing rescue information, arranging travel for animals to new homes and rescue groups etc. If the county can not help with the shelter and you feel so inclined I urge you to contact this advocacy group and find out how you can help. Please join their facebook page to keep informed.
Welcome to the Thursday Open Line
The Advocates for Vance County Shelter Animals are some great people! I have been a member of their Facebook page for a while now. They work non-stop to find homes for these animals or at least rescue/foster homes until they can get forever homes. A handful of people give of themselves and their own money to help. I would really like to see the county step up to help even half as much as these people do! Even if you cannot adopt, foster or otherwise take in an animal there are other ways you can help…donate an adoption fee or some money to help with the cost of vetting, transport or other things needed…even spreading the Facebook page can help because maybe someone is looking for a new four legged family member and doesn’t know they are there. I think very highly of the people at Advocates for Vance County Shelter Animals!
On another note…I really wish Vance County would stop this gas chamber that they use to put the animals down in!!! I do understand sometimes an animal is too sick and it would be better for them not to suffer HOWEVER I don’t think sticking them in a box and having them suffer until the end is at all right! Why can’t the county use the same method as vets use…put them to sleep with an injection? I would honestly take care of one of my animals until the end came on it’s own before I would put them down because truthfully would you put down a sick family member…no! And my animals are family members…not pets! I hope within the next couple of years to be able to start my own rescue group but until that time I will try to do whatever I can to help and I hope a few more people will step up to do the same!
Thank you for commenting on this issue. Yes, the AVCA tries very hard to save the animals. A member was the person who put the note on the kitten’s cage. Also thanks for the facebook information.
Please people, Take care of your animals. In this hot weather, forcing an animal to go without food, water, and proper shelter is animal abuse. Leaving an animal outside in a wire cage without the necessities of life, is felony neglect, punishable by prison. Also, leaving an animal tied so long that the chain has grown into the dogs neck is also felonious abuse. It doesn’t take an ounce of common sense to know the wonderful and loyal companions do not deserve anything other than the best you have. After all, you chose them, they didn’t choose you. I know that times are extremely hard, but, don’t make the pets suffer for it. Call someone for help before the situation gets bad enough to land you in jail and the animals having to be euthanized Call Animal Control, at 252 492 3736 or if necessary, call Sara Coffey at 252 430 6300. I may not can do anything but get you in touch with no kill shelters or find family homes. Anything would be better than starving them to death.
Ellen Paynter, I also want to continue doing the rescue that I do and would love to meet with you and any others to pool our resources for the benefit of these animals. I spend quite a bit of money from my pocket rescuing, having treated and paying the bills before I find a suitable home. The home must have a good track record of taking their own animals for vet care. Please e-mail me at coffeysbonding@embarqmail.com with any recomendations. Mine are local vets Dr. Gwyn and Dr. Conde at West Hills. They do a great job and are very compassionate. Also, Dr. Bridgette Waters, behind McDonalds on Dabney Drive understands the hardships and work really well with people. With all the available sources, there are no excuses to starve and abuse animals.
Hot Dog…your right it makes me sick some of the things people do to their animals!!! My son used to work at Warren County animal shelter n I really wanted to show some of the people that hurt these animals what it felt like!!!
At the moment I cannot start the rescue but I am hoping to get it up n running within two years (hopefully sooner) but I will save your information and when I am ready to start maybe you can provide me with advice and guidance as you have already been doing it!
I applaud Ms. Coffey and all the rest for their efforts. This is a job that will always need to be done and will never go away. AVCSA and what the new Ruin Creek effort is doing are achored attempts to combat them. The next step would be to use these groups to grab the ears of our Vance County leaders. In a time where there is not alot to go around, outside donations will need to be made by people like us. I have made one and hope to be able to do more in the future.
The problems at the shelter are yet another example of the continued lack of progress in our town/county. These are the kinds of things that happen when leadership does an incomplete job of maintaining our public facilities and not working to bring new ideas and work to our area. Perhaps we have some more forward thinking indivduals in place now that will help alleviate these problems. (I am pointing to you Ms. Coffey :-) This county needs income, not grants or more governmental handouts. We need honest to goodness industry. Jobs = tax revenue = a better Vance County and a brighter City of Henderson.
I wish that people would stop dropping out their pets on “country roads”.
It’s inhumane and irresponsible.
If you no longer want your pet..take it to a shelter.
I used to work at Wake Co. SPCA when they had a gas chamber loading and unloading the animals…
It’s horrible for them, terrified from the noise and enclosure, screaming and fighting, I won’t go into any more details. We quickly were taught to euthanize by injection which wasn’t easy on us, but much easier for the animals…adopted the attitude of best possible homes or best possible death. Couldn’t do it now unless an animal was suffering.
Adoptathons, rescues and even euthanasia is part of the solution until we can get people educated about spay/neuter. Please support SNAP and get the word out in the rural areas. If people can’t afford to feed 3 pets they can’t afford to feed 15.
This is where this website can be really great. It is creating awareness about all the exciting things going on with animal shelters in Vance County and uniting many of us with different political views on at least one issue.
