A reminder that tonight hosts the Neighborhood Watch Meeting at Maria Parham Medical Center.  For more information please click the previous link to go to our calendar event page.

In Wednesday night’s presidential speech, Obama called for 30,000 troops to be pulled from Afghanistan.  Is it too little too late?  Or should we keep our troops there to secure our national security?

The Dispatch is reporting there is a newly Economic Development Manager–This is his 3rd position in as many years–What is going on?

  2. One Voice June 23, 2011 at 3:32 pm

i’d like to know what is going on too; seems like only one comment in almost 48 hrs.. Never thought I’d think this but sure miss Ira. At least he kept things stirred up.

  3. Henry the Eighth June 23, 2011 at 4:13 pm

This is much better number 2.

  4. Phil Hart June 23, 2011 at 4:33 pm

The new EDC manager’s name is Stuart Litvin if anyone’s interested

  5. prudence June 23, 2011 at 5:09 pm

WIZS just said Mr. Litvin is 64 years old–. Also, those who hired him didn’t want to mention where he worked at present, but that he was the right fit for us–do not quote me word for word.

  6. Dagny June 23, 2011 at 5:11 pm

Also from the front page of the Dispatch, where is the money coming from to build high speed rail? Who is going to ride it? Won’t it absolutely destroy the city by cutting it in half and won’t it be ugly and noisy?

Does look like a lot of job turn over, how long will he last here?

  7. Betterworld June 23, 2011 at 5:48 pm

I’m concerned about his work history as noted in the Dispatch: previous jobs worked at for 11 months and 14 months? That doesn’t bode well for us.

Does anyone know where the board is on selecting a new school superintendent ? I heard Ronald Gregory might be a possibility.

  9. prudence June 23, 2011 at 11:17 pm

I believe the Board meets on the 29th and the last item on the agenda is an executive session. I am still ashamed at the way they interviewed prospective candidates in motels instead of the grand new central office.

In my opinion we need a whole new board –especially if your rumor is true. We need new blood up there in Central Office and fewer talking heads!

being a former employee of VCS I have a ‘gut feeling’ that gregory has the edge going into the interview process. I can hear the School Board now:”He was qualified and has been around Vance Co. Schools and therefore has invaluable knowledge that an “outsider” would not”! WRONG!! This school system needs a little shaking up…especially at the top. Did anyone see the notorious citizens of Vance County whose names were listed in the Daily Dispatch this week for being delinquent on taxes? I noticed that one of the names is an employee of VCS who has an office over on Graham Ave. It wasn’t gregory but HER last name rhymes with CROOKS…..matter of fact if you change the “C” to a “B” you will indeed have HER last name! Must be nice to live in Cobble Stone? With the amount of $$$$ this lady makes it seems as if a property tax shouldn’t be a burden!
Like Mr. Lewis Edwards’ famous quote goes:”You are getting what you are willing to accept”!! Is this a good example to the other taxpayers who struggle to pay monthly bills..not to mention tax bills? I don’t think so!! Also, what about the # of properties that a former elected official(H. Butler) had listed as not having paid the taxes on? Is that as disturbing to you as it was to me? I didn’t want to pay my property tax…..but I also didn’t want my name in the paper for everyone to see!!! I guess some people don’t mind letting everyone know that they don’t pay their taxes….at least not on time!!!!

  11. prudence June 24, 2011 at 12:08 pm

For the record, I have tried to change the membership of Boards with my vote .–but it has been a lost cause. We had better wake up soon, but I have this gut feeling that not enough voters can see that change is needed–nor do they want it.

The schools here need a new, outside of this area superintendent–who can see beyond retirement !!!

While on the topic of tax deadbeats I also noticed in the Daily Dispatch that a certain Church in the Flint Hill area whose Pastor is also an elected official(city council woman) has some properties that are delinquent as well. Why does a Church own so many rental properties or are they the ones ‘donated’ to the Church by a group of local rental company…Rogers & Rogers? Remember when that happened? I do!! No rumormill….just facts!! I say that if ANY elected official is a tax deadbeat then they should immediately be kicked off whatever body they are on or have the $$ that is paid to them by taxpayers go towards the delinquent taxes!! Citizens of Vance..you have the ‘creme’ de la ‘creme’ representing you and no wonder Vance County ranks high in all the BAD categories!! Keep up the good…err..bad work!! Citizens of surrounding counties certainly appreciate it!!

  13. Betterworld June 24, 2011 at 5:20 pm

U R getting — it is as disturbing to me as it is to you, but I’m starting to think this is how the citizens want it to be. How else to explain it?

  14. kathdean06 June 25, 2011 at 3:51 am

I am still looking for anyone that has had any dealings with Mariah Parham Hospital, I would love to hear positive as well as negative. My personal e mail is Kyleswife06@hotmail.com. Thanks Folks..Let me hear from you !!

  15. prudence June 25, 2011 at 10:06 am

Kathdean—Get yourself an out-of-town lawyer and let them do their thing.

is this kyle’s wife who has his name in the paper seemingly ever other week? If so, I would not worry about MPMC but rather trying to straighten out my husband. If not, this isn’t the place for the info. you need. Get a lawyer like “prudence” suggested.

  17. historical character June 25, 2011 at 5:22 pm

We need new people to head schools .If we continue to do what we always did we will get what we always got and that will lead to insanity. WE NEED CHANGE NOW

  18. Henry the Eighth June 26, 2011 at 9:15 am

I don’t think they are going to spend $20000 to search for a Superintendant and end up choosing a loser from within their own ranks. And for the person that keeps asking about MPH, I had kidney stones one night went there and told them I was in excruciating pain and they would not even admit me until 5 hours later. They took the people who didn’t appear to be in any pain before me and to be stereotypical I don’t think they were going to pay anything either.

I find it “interesting” that the Pastor of the Church in Flint Hill who had the delinquent taxes posted in the Daily Dispatch was quoted in the article about “BLACK KILLING BLACKS”. I have always wondered why the African American pastors/preachers/reverends/etc. don’t get more involved in trying to change some of the mindset of the young black men within the Church and/or community. One so-called reverend is VERY VOCAL when talking about the Henderson Police Dept. but where is he when these young black men are ‘crying out for help and/or attention’? Actions speak louder than any words or sermon…..even if it’s given on the sidewalk on Garnett St. In any other country it would be classified as ******** but within the USA it has become the way of life for the African American Community or so it seems. Check the news just the past couple of days…..Raleigh….Durham….I say where are the Black Leaders who can help turn the tide of this murderous tidal wave that is wiping out an entire generation of young, black men? I liked Commissioner Garrison’s assessment that the schools and government needed to do more!! NICE!! How about the father’s of these young men DO MORE!!!!!! and not continue to expect everyone else to teach YOUR child the VALUE of LIFE!!!!
I’m still waiting for the answer to my question as to why the city council woman’s Church owns so many properties and why the taxes aren’t being paid……at least not on time!!! What do you say Ms. Peace-Jenkins? Also, how do your Church get all these properties? Why does the Church even have them? How many other Churches in Vance County have rental houses? “INTERESTING”!!!!!!! indeed………stay tuned…………………..

  20. Betterworld June 26, 2011 at 10:21 pm

I think the answer is that they financially benefit from keeping the mindset where it is, U R, rather than REALLY helping anyone.

  21. ziggy June 29, 2011 at 12:52 am

sad to say it Betterworld..but I’d have to agree.
