We’d like you guys to send in July 4th events in the area so we can compile a list.
We know that July 2nd, 6:30pm to 10pm will be the fireworks at Satterwhite Point on Kerr Lake. Bus service is avaiable as well from the Roses parking lot on Norlina Road from 4-7:30pm. Buses run every 30 minutes and are free. Also on site will be live entertainment by Eric & Laurie and Hicksboro Station, food vendors, glow sticks, t-shirt sales. Bring your lawn chair or blanket. Admission is free. Of course, many people choose to view these fireworks from their boat on the lake as well.

I am very surprised that more people haven’t responded to my little survey concerning Mariah Parham Hospital. I am still very interested in positive as well as negative responses. I am new to this site and really don’t know the ins and outs. Mariah Parham is a large local business.But doesn’t seem to generate much interest in it’s day to day operations. Maybe there is another area I could look in to get some statistics. Any ideas? thanks
It may help to understand what kind of info you are looking for. Is it patient care?Billing issues? food quality? Cleanliness?
I see where our county again has made the news in BIG BLAZING HEADLINES: Vance County has the highest crime rate in the state of North Carolina! The worst out of 100 counties! We are numero uno! That is an honor that no one else shares. maybe our commissioners when they go on their meeting can brag about this honor.

kathdean, MPH is a great community hospital that will get even stronger and offer more services after the upcoming merger. Some things still require a trip down to Duke or UNC, which we are also lucky to have close by. Every nurse, Doctor and administrator I know is very professional and capable. Does that help or are you just looking for “dirt”?
Well said One Voice, all this section 8 housing has turned Henderson into a cesspool. I don’t see things getting better only worse. I would consider selling my house and moving but who in their right mind would want to buy it and live here.
I totally agree Dazed and Confused! And the people running the show are a big part of the problem and/or have their heads buried in the ground.
Does anyone remember the other tax deadbeat council member who got voted off? I think he was a disbarred attorney who notoriously didn’t pay his taxes. What’s the difference between him and council member Peace-Jenkins? How is she allowed to vote on a city budget with increases in sanitation/water rates in order to balance the budget b/c the $$$ just isn’t available anywhere else? Well I have a NOVEL IDEA……pay your taxes Mrs. Peace-Jenkins(along with other tax deadbeats) and maybe the city can get back on some solid financial ground instead of hidden fees,etc. PAY YOUR TAXES ELECTED OFFICIALS or be removed from office!!!! Plain & Simple!! How does someone have the audacity to vote on a budget proprosal when they don’t even pay there own taxes? PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here’s an idea: have the ‘brother’s company’ who donated some of the land/property to ante up some $$ to get you off the tax deadbeat list!! What a shame and disgrace to an honest, hardworking, taxpaying citizen when they look in the paper and see an ELECTED OFFICIAL who doesn’t do what is required by LAW to do!! Shame on you and everyone else who doesn’t pay taxes including ex-council member Harriet Butler!! You 2 ladies(term used very loosely)are good examples of why Henderson/Vance is in the shape it is financially. Good work………………NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so Betterworld who do you suggest run against these tax deadbeats? Certainly a man/woman with integrity/character/morals who abides by the LAW and pays taxes would be a viable candidate. Don’t you think so? I was looking at the elected officials in the Henderson/Vance area and one thing is for sure….you all have some ‘gems’. Example:The Chairman of the County Commissioners went on the record when he was passed over the the Chairman’s seat the last years that Danny Wright was on the commission. Eddie Wright was the ‘next in line’ before Danny Wright made the announcement that he wouldn’t run again and thus was made the Chairman as sort of a ‘curtain call’ and Eddie Wright voiced his disappointment that it was ‘his turn’ to be Chairman and if I’m not mistaken didn’t vote for Danny to get the job..but he did w/o Eddie’s vote. He must have gotten over it b/c when he got the Chairman’s seat he was as happy as a pig in the mud. On the City Council you have the newest member Sara Coffey who campaigned that she wouldn’t be a “puppet” like the rest and would vote her convictions,etc. I think that lasted all of about 1 meeting. She campaigned that she would investigate & report who paid for the ex-councilman alston’s debris clean-up….Guess what….she may have investigated but never disclosed the info. I put it in the campaign rhetoric of I’ll say what I think they want to hear. She also campaigned that she would investigate the UNFAIR TAXATION a.k.a. Joint Ventures and report….Guess what…nothing once again.
Finally, the Board of Education….what a joke. The notoriously tax deadbeat E.Cash. How many years has his name been on the deadbeat list? Numerous!! I say the next time you want FREE entertainment, go to a Board Meeting and listen to him ramble through a discussion.
Here’s a list that I wouldn’t want as the ‘face’ of my city/county: E.Cash, E. Wright, S. Coffey, T. Hester(infamous for the Hester v. HiH case where he had the identities of everyone but “interesting” outed for basically voicing there opinion of him and his businesses), B. Peace-Jenkins(tax deadbeat who was in the paper), G. Daye(who claims he’s still learning the duties of a councilman). Oh……I almost forgot about T. Hester who after getting beat in a prior commissioner’s race was quoted as saying something along the lines of “I’ll never run again”…well at least not until the next election!! Talk about a sore loser…he wins….by a landslide!!! Those are just a few…check the others and tell me are you PROUD to call them “for the people?”
I can’t think of any good contenders at this very moment. I think you about disqualified most of the County when you said integrity and morals — but we do have some interesting (term used loosely) ‘characters.’

You have wrote an excellent article. I still can’t get over the recent award the county got for having the worst crime in the state; and our leaders don’t care. Don’t they know it reflects back on them(the ones who we elected?) And in the end it hurts us, the real taxpayers because no one wants to move here, no industries or companies, nothing but the deadbeats that no one else wants.
