Site Selectors Rank North Carolina No. 2 in Best States for Business


N.C. Department of Commerce and Charlotte Regional Partnership rank no. 2 and no. 3 for Best in Class.

North Carolina was ranked second for “Best States for Business” in the Development Counsellors International (DCI) 2011 edition Winning Strategies in Economic Development Marketing study, released September 19, 2011 at the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference in Charlotte.

This is the sixth installment of the study, which is based on DCI’s survey of 322 corporate executives with site selection responsibilities. The 2011 study marks DCI’s first time asking the more than 50 location advisors included in the survey audience to select the best regional and state economic development groups.

In addition to North Carolina ranking as a top place to do business, the N.C. Department of Commerce captured second place for “Best in Class State Economic Development Organizations.”

The N.C. Department of Commerce is the state’s leading economic development agency, working with local, regional, national and international companies. The department’s mission is to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for all North Carolinians. The mission is carried out by serving existing business and industry, including providing international trade assistance; recruiting new jobs and domestic and foreign investment; encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation; marketing North Carolina and its brand; supporting workforce development; strengthening communities; and promoting tourism, film and sports development. The Department also provides data, statistics, information and reports for state government and agencies, which regulate commerce in the state.

In the “Best in Class Regional Economic Development Organizations” category, Charlotte Regional Partnership earned the third place rank.

The Charlotte Regional Partnership is a nonprofit, public/private economic development organization that works to leverage regional resources to market the 16-county Charlotte region. The Partnership’s business development team hosts, visits and responds to site selection advisors and corporate decision makers throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. The Partnership also spreads the word by working with national and international reporters on stories that position the region as a premier business destination. Articles have appeared in publications as diverse as The Wall Street Journal, Time, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Boston Globe.
