Tuesday evening the US Senate defeated President Obama’s American Jobs Act. The Senate defeated President Barack Obama’s job-creation package on Tuesday in a sign that Washington is likely too paralyzed to take major steps to spur hiring before the 2012 elections.
I saw a news item posted Tuesday regarding a zoning issue that I think explains a bit why some people did not want the county to enact a zoning ordinance. This gentleman built a treehouse in his yard for his kid, he called ahead of time to ask about a permit and was told he didn’t need one. He built the house. Afterwards after someone complained, the guy, Mark Grapin was told he had to treat it like an addition to his house and get a zoning variance. He spent more than $1,800 getting the proper forms and going through a hearing. The home sits on a corner lot and Zoning Board Chairman John Ribble says that means what Grapin thought was a side lot is actually the front lot. The variance was rejected. Grapin says he has an appeal scheduled for Nov. 30, but if he loses that he will have to remove the treehouse. You can read the full article here. Note that this was not in Henderson, or Vance County or even North Carolina, (it was in Virginia) but the article reminded me of what commenters complained about here previously.
We’d like to remind everyone ahead of time of the upcoming car shows in downtown Henderson this coming weekend. Last years attendance estimates I’ve heard around 40,000 people showed up throughout the weekend. I went myself last year for the first time and have to say genuinely impressed with the amount of cars and people there. I’ve never seen Garnett Street filled with so many people. I have no interest in cars at all, as long as mine gets me from A to B I’m happy with it. But even if you have no interest in cars, I’d suggest you to still come and I bet you’ll be at least a little impressed with the things you’ll see. Admission is free and open to the public.
Welcome to the Wednesday Open Line!
