Monday, The Wake County Board of Commissioners approved new restrictions for begging in public places Tuesday, requiring that panhandlers present a photo ID and obtain a permit. The permits would be free and renewable each year. Chairman Paul Coble said the idea is to protect motorists and beggars at intersections. Raleigh and other municipalities already have similar rules. You can read more about it here
Should Henderson have such restrictions of beggars? Are you bothered by them in Vance County, if so where do you see problems?
I have approached several times at the Post Office on Garnett Street and other times in the parking lot of Food Lion on Raleigh Road. Normally the beggars are pretty nice. Normally I do not give anything to them at all and try to keep them atleast an arm’s length away. Had one (at the PO) who decided it was a good idea to cuss at me when I turned him down.
Mojo, Had the same person cuss me recently too, Really made me mad, so I suggested he get a job as a greeter at Wal-Mart. He cussed me more.
It’s sad Mingo. At least we don’t have to worry about squeegy kids here. Those are the ones who run out during a red light and wash your windsheild. To answer the question of the day, No. I do not think the City of Henderson needs to do anything about beggars. Just don’t see that being a problem right now.
I was unaware that Henderson had an operating post office. I have been using the one in Oxford for three years because it is open 9 – 5 during the week and 9 – 12 on Saturdays.
For my own safety I stay out of Henderson from near sun down until after sun rise. It appears that even shoppers are staying home instead of visiting JC Penny’s or Belk’s after sunset.
Anonymous, you need to read the question; what you posted has nothing to do with the question.
The employees at the Oxford Post Office are ten times nicer and much more helpful than the others I have visited.
I go to the Post Office on Garnett Street and the employee’s there have never been anything but “first class”. We know each other by name and greet one another with a smile. It is amazing the kind of service I get at places, any where really, when I greet them with a smile and a quick hello. It disarms them and sets a positive tone for the transaction. More people need to try it out. Some may say that I am not jaded enough by life. I say life is what you make it!
There should be a minimal cost for a permit to beg.
Prudence, I think Durham charges $45 a year for a begging permit. A good beggar can make the $45 in a few hours at the right intersection.
