Principal Sherri Bowers of Pinkston Street Elementary School, is joined by several of her third-grade students in accepting a $1,500 check from George Fowler, executive director of the Vance County Public School Foundation, for the purchase of third-grade science kits. The kits will be used in all of the school’s third-grade classrooms for students to participate in hands-on science activities. The donation is part of a $15,000 donation made to the Public School Foundation by an anonymous donor who stipulated that $14,000 must go to Pinkston Street Elementary.

The donation was made last March. Since that time, the Public School Foundation presented a check for $500 in early August to the school for school supplies. The money was used to purchase school supplies during the N.C. Tax Free Holiday for needy students. In late October, the organization presented the school with a check for $2,500 to help with the costs of a College Road Trip for fourth and fifth graders at Pinkston Street.

On November 18, the students and their teachers will travel to the Greensboro area to visit several college campuses in an attempt to expose the students to the college setting and encourage them to work toward pursuing a college education. More funds from the anonymous donation will be given to the school later to assist with the costs of a trip in the spring to Washington, D.C. for fifth graders. This school year is the first in the two-year period that the donated funds will be used to assist with programs and activities at Pinkston Street Elementary School.
