Seven educators in Vance County Schools have earned certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and two more local educators have obtained recertification.
Information on the national certification was released today by NBPTS.
Those educators earning the 10-year certification include: April Andrews, Janette Johnson, Cynthia Simpson and Mary Willis, all of Zeb Vance Elementary School; Chris Leas of E.O. Young Jr. Elementary School; Amanda O’Connor of E.M. Rollins Elementary School; and Ann Behar of Northern Vance High School.
The national board certification is the highest possible professional certification for a teacher. The achievement carries with it a 12-percent salary increase for its recipient. National certification is available to classroom teachers, school counselors and school media specialists. Vance County Schools now has 47 educators who are national board certified.
Yvonne Campbell and Carole Griffin, both faculty members at Northern Vance High School, have earned their national board recertification. Both obtained their initial certification 10 years ago and now have successfully completed requirements for recertification.
Seeking national board certification is an intense and very involved process. Typically, educators work on certification requirements from early in the school year until the following April. Requirements include submitting several written responses, lesson plans, examples of students’ work, videotapes of classroom instruction and completing a four-hour online examination.
The NBPTS notifies educators who have earned national certification each November and the information is released to the public by early December.
