The Henderson Police Department is recognizing two officers as Co-Officers of the Month for November 2011.
On November 27, 2011, Section 3 officers were dispatched to the Henderson Convention Center on Wortham Court to assist the Vance County Sheriff’s Department with a large crowd. Members of the Sheriff’s Department were working off duty security at the location for a party. Responding officers were advised that several fights had occurred and there were large groups of disorderly persons still on scene. Once on scene officers were attempting to direct vehicle traffic away from the area.
As officer Wormley was arriving on scene a subject in an adjacent parking lot began firing a handgun at another subject in a vehicle. Officer Wormley witnessed the incident. He moved his patrol vehicle to an area that he could use it for cover and exited the vehicle while notifying other officers of the situation via radio. Officer Wormley confronted the subject in the parking lot. Officer Wormley using verbal commands was able to get the subject to surrender and lay face down on the ground. Additional officers that were already on scene nearby ran to his location and assisted in taking the subject into custody. Officer Wormley recovered the handgun that the suspect had thrown under a car. A check of the weapon through NCIC showed that it had been stolen during a residential break-in two weeks prior in Granville County.
The victim of the shooting was located a short time later. Luckily the victim did not sustain any injuries as his vehicle was struck by the bullets. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Discharging a Weapon within City Limits.
During this dangerous incident Officer Wormley showed outstanding courage in confronting an armed subject moments after the subject was shooting at the victim. In addition to this incident Officer Wormley answered 96 calls for service, investigated 26 incidents, served 6 criminal processes and conducted fourteen traffic stops resulting in 3 citations.
On Wednesday, November 2, 2011 Officer Macialek responded to a larceny at Wal-Mart. On arriving he spoke with Loss Prevention manager Curtis Vick. Vick stated that while viewing the store’s video security camera system he observed an employee scanning items for a costumer. Some of the items were voided by still given to the costumer. The employee refused to speak to Officer Macialek about the incident. The employee was arrested and charged with Larceny by Employee.
Later this same day Officer Macialek responded to assist Probation/Parole at 510 Mayo Street. On arriving there he observed several probation/parole officers conducting a warrantless search of the home per conditions of probation. The probationer became nervous when his jacket was moved. On checking the jacket a controlled substance was found. Also drug paraphernalia was found on the probationer. The probationer was charged with Possession of Schedule II Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
On Wednesday, November 30, 2011 Officer Macialek was parked stationary at the next business complex next to Gate City Foods completing reports. Macialek saw a white male being chased by a black male. He saw the black male assault the white male. The white male got away from the black male and ran into Gate City Foods store. The black male was accompanied by another black male. As Officer Macialek drove toward the 2 black males they ran toward First Avenue. As Macialek turned onto First Ave. he saw a vehicle pulling away with the 2 black males seated in the back seat. He conducted a traffic stop and requested additional officers. When other officers arrived the 2 black males were removed from the car. One of the males was arrested for assault (committed in Macialek’s presence) and on searching the male, Schedule I Controlled Substance was recovered. The black male was charged with Assault, Possession of Schedule I Controlled Substance and Resist, Delay & Obstruct. The other black male was charged with Assault and Resist, Delay & Obstruct. The driver was charged with Resist, Delay & Obstruct.
Officer Macialek also made 4 misdemeanor arrests during the month. He served 13 warrants. Macialek answered 106 calls for service and completed 21 incident/motor vehicle crash reports. He assisted other officers 76 times.
Good Job Officer D. Wormley as well as Officer Macialek. I have known Officer Wormley since our softball playing days and he is about as humble of a police officer as you will ever see. He is also an excellent role model to the youth within the community b/c you can catch him almost at any given time at the Aycock Rec. Center watching his kids or other kids playing sports. GOOD JOB to both Officers!! After a recent travesty that was avoided involving myself and the HPD I am forever thankful for true, honest, hardworking Police Offficers!! Keep up the Good Work fellas!!
