Friday / Weekend Open Line

Reader Michael Bobbitt sent in a good suggestion for HiH readers Thursday.   Every year, the Vance County Board of Commissioners attend an annual retreat where they discuss the year and future goals for the county.   This years retreat is January 19th, 2012 from 10am to 3pm at the Satterwhite Point Glass House.

The Henderson City Countil members will hold their Strategic Planning Retreat on January 26th, 2012 at the Aycock Recreational Center.

What are your concerns?  What would be on your wish list of things they should discuss?  Please comment on Mr. Bobbitt’s article regarding this so we can keep them all in one place.  I’ll try to include this in each day’s open line until then.

A few big job announcements in North Carolina on Thursday, unfortunately not near here.  But they are signs of a possible growing economy.  I’ve posted them in our news feed for the day.  How is your business holding up?

Reports from this past holiday season are initiallys showing a less than expected.  Sometimes when I’m researching various articles to discuss in the lines I get seemingly conflicting information.  For instance:

Retail sales barely rose in December, but the gain was enough to lift sales to a record level for 2011. It marked the largest annual increase in more than a decade.  (read more)

vs.

U.S. retail sales rose at the weakest pace in seven months in December and first-time claims for jobless benefits moved higher last week, signs the economic recovery is shaky despite a recent pick-up in growth.  This week, the Federal Reserve issued a report saying the final six weeks of 2011 were among the economy’s best last year. The report pointed to higher holiday and auto sales, along with increased travel.  (read more)

So largest annual increase in a decade, but rose at weakest pace in seven months?  I really don’t think anyone has a clue what the economy is doing as each report every month always says “unemployment numbers fell, or sales rose less than expected, or profits rose slightly” all due to “a slower than expected recovery.  Each article says in one way or another that it’s due to a slower than expected recovery, and they have been that way for 2 years.

I do ‘think’ it’s turning around by looking at our own numbers.  Do you think Henderson / Vance County leaders are doing all they can to help our own area turn around?  I invite you to discuss here, but anything specific might be best in the discussion on Mr. Bobbitt’s article.

BTW, anyone is welcome to have an ‘article’ here.  Just email it to us submit@homeinhenderson.com.  Got something to say just need a soapbox?

Welcome to the Friday / Weekend Open Line!
