Monday Open Line

Sunday, January 15th.  Dr. Martin Luther King would be 83 years old.  The civil rights leader, minister, and recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize was born in 1929 and assassinated in 1968.  Monday is a federal holiday honoring his memory and marking his long fight for equality for everyone through nonviolent means.  King’s hopes for America’s future were embodied in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C.  Today, America’s diverse population continues to work toward King’s dream, including 224 million whites, 39 million African- Americans, over 14.5 million Asians and about 3 million American Indians and Alaska Natives.  Just over 50-million of the U.S. population is of Hispanic origin.

Today, City Hall offices will be closed.

In this weeks Weekly Address: Helping American Businesses Succeed.  President Obama discusses steps he’s taking to ensure that more goods and products stamped “Made in America” are sold in the United States and around the world.

This week, the President visited the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, welcomed this year’s NBA Champs—the Dallas Mavericks—addressed the EPA, announced a new Chief of Staff, and introduced the White House’s Insourcing Initiative.

We have a new item at the top right header menu, Retreat Suggestions.  Clicking will take you to Mr. Michael Bobbitt’s call for suggestions to our Vance County Commissioners to consider during their annual retreat this week.  We will collect suggestions on that page until Wednesday at Noon, after which we will compile them and send to the the clerks office, who has assured me they will be given to the commissioners during the retreat to be read.   Since they already have a full agenda, they can’t specifically comment on the suggestions, but will be read and may comment at a later time.

Also, the newletter from Mr. Doug Berger received some comments regarding the North Carolina Associate of Educators issue.  I asked Mr. Berger if he would like to respond to your comments and he has done so via email to me directly, which I have put in the comments of the article.  Please take the time to read  his response and thank him for interacting with us here at HiH.

May I suggest that you be respectful in your comments, and if you see someone saying something that may be disrespectful and harmful dislike that comment.  Your representatives and potential reps will NOT participate on here if you make personal attacks and harmful quips you can’t backup.  They do want to hear your comments and discussions, as long as you act like adults.  If you are concerned with the direction Vance County and Henderson are headed promote good discussion here and your reps will participate, or you’ve ruined your chance for HiH to help present and shape the good things that can be.

Welcome to the Monday Open Lines!
