Democratic North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue, the first woman elected governor in the state, said Thursday she would not seek re-election this year because she believes a bid would make it more difficult to fund education. “We live in highly partisan times, where some people seem more worried about scoring political points than working together to address the real challenges our state faces,” Perdue said in an email to supporters. A re-election bid, she added, “will only further politicize the fight to adequately fund our schools.” (read more)

Welcome to the Open Lines!
A student almost dies at SVHS Wed. after being attacked by 3 other students using brass knuckles and it barely gets mentioned in the local paper. What’s wrong with this picture ??
Plenty is wrong with this picture Dazed and Confused. The Sheriff should have reported this to the media. In my opinion, the Dispatch should have a reporter who handles all the crime reports–the newspaper could help make the public aware of just how rough things are.
Sadly, the Dispatch gets thinner and thinner and soon there probably won’t be one. It would be better to have factual reporting of incidents than to have rumors out there .
We’ve been patiently reading the Dispatch regarding this development, too and no mention in the paper. What are we paying our subscription fee for?
The young men involved in the incident are already growing a history of violence. In fact, one of the young men who assaulted the other can be viewed in this video

We wonder how the school board will respond to the pleas to long-term these children. Will they let them back in the halls of our schools, to prove we let students get away with anything, or will the school board grow a spine and say, “We can’t continue allowing this nonsense!”
Dazed & Confused: If you have 1st hand knowledge of the incident then shine some light onto it via HiH. I’m sure Mr. Phil Hart would appreciate it since by his own accord he doesn’t get much info.(if any at all) from the Sheriff’s Dept. You say it ‘barely gets mentioned’ in the local paper? I didn’t see anything at all about it in the local paper. Too many 17-19 year old students are still enrolled so that they can continue to draw a SSI check while mommy gets to sit back and watch Jerry Springer all day living in her Section 8 dwelling waiting on next month’s food stamps to be loaded onto her card so she can sell em’ to have some $$$ to go to one of the many internet casinos in Vance County. Idle minds=disaster!!!! and do you know of anyone who is satisfied with what the administration is doing with the local School System? And they are crying about $$$ being funneled away b/c too many charter schools are taking their students. The charter schools are taking public school students b/c believe it or not there are a few parents who don’t want there kids to become another Vance Co. statistic!!!
While there have been a few editorials of late that I agree with, the Dispatch is much too liberal for me to spend money on.
Dazed/Confused…what’s the status of the assault victim? You said it was barely mentioned in the local paper but I have yet to see any mention at all. Can you tell us what day it was mentioned in the paper?
I’m somewhat torn about Perdue — if she ran again, the Republicans would definitely win (a good thing). Now, the Democrats have a chance to find a better candidate than her, and potentially maintain the governorship. So, I’m glad she’s going to be gone — but I’m less sure of what the end result will be.
I feel the same way, Betterworld. I thought that McCory was the better candidate last time out and felt as though he would win this election verses Perdue. Now uncertainty has entered the picture once more. I am a registered Democrat but NEVER VOTE A STRAIGHT TICKET. I vote for who I believe is the better candidate no matter the party affiliation. Dalton, Faison and whoever else decides to run better bring their ‘A’ game. I want to hear them out but right now I know that Pat McCory has plans and is ready to take our state forward. Something rather large must have occured for Bev to hang it up…..
I agree Mojo.
