Anonymous: Racism in Vance County

The following letter was submitted to us today from an anonymous reader:  (Not the commenter named Anonymous, but an anonymous submitter.)

I have never lived in such a racist town.  I have been called names that are very derogatory and I cannot tell you on how many occasions I have been called a name referring to my race.  Now, I can deal with it.  But when it comes to my child being shunned at school because of her race, well, that’s a whole different issue.  My child has been told by other students that she cannot stand in the shade because of her race.  When I have to explain to my child what a “honkey” is, I tend to get upset.  These are children, seven and eight year olds.  We do not know racism in my house, why is she being exposed to it?  Does the school system do anything about racism?  Of course not.   It is tolerated.

The definition of racism is hatred of another race.  That’s right I said RACE.  I did not say Jews, African Americans, Whites or Indians.  I said RACE.  I think sometimes people tend to forget the fact that racism is towards all races.  I have never seen such racism in all of my life until I have moved here.  No one should feel bad for their race.  Not African American or Whites.

So, if the school board is not doing anything about it, what can WE do?   It stops with our children.  Educate them. Make them aware.  Do not talk about other races in a manner that makes the children feel like they are superior due to their race.    No one should ever have to explain to their children why they are being picked on because of their race.  Let’s end this NOW.  Let’s start with Vance County!
