In support of the N.C. Dept. of Commerce’s Community Development Division and its Certified Retirement Community Program, the Division of Tourism has launched RetireNC.com, a new microsite within the VisitNC.com family of sites. RetireNC.com provides an easy gateway for prospective retirees wanting to learn more about the quality of life advantages of retiring in North Carolina. The site provides an overview of retirement areas and those communities that have successfully completed the state’s certification process. Lumberton is featured as North Carolina’s first Certified Retirement Community on RetireNC.com and more communities are currently engaged in the application process. The Division will be supporting the effort with additional marketing initiatives including search engine marketing, media relations outreach, the Travel Guide and more. North Carolina communities active in retirement marketing should be sure to link to RetireNC.com.
Henderson is currently listed as #9 out of 16 suggested retirement areas in North Carolina, reading:
Henderson welcomes retirees looking for a small city with amenities of lake living. While centrally located along I-85, Kerr Lake is a main attraction with two marinas.
I think the #’s are in no particular order though, so don’t be alarmed.

Thank you thank you Kerr Lake! Now let’s cooperate and see if we can’t figure out a way to actually get folks to move into the city limits.
The only way people with money will move here is after the section 8 housing is radically reduced and old tobacco warehouses torn down.
Why would anyone with any intelligence want to move into the city limits of Henderson ?? I would move out of this rat hole town myself if I could sell my house.
Dazed and Confused, check with Gary Morgan about selling your house. He thinks adding section 8 housing and facilities is good for the city. When you talk with Gary ask him why he lives in another county far away from the disaster he and his kind have brought us.
You got to be joking, Henderson a suggested retirement area!! I’m with Dazed, i would get out of here if it was possible for me right now.
Anonymous,
You’re just so funny and I am amazed at your ability as a fortune teller. I didn’t know I felt that way about Section 8. I’ll also bet you didn’t know that a small few of us (through Tarheel Regional CDC) are totally renovating homes in Henderson so that folks can be homeowners with total mortgage payments of $375 or less (that’s mortgage, interest, taxes and insurance). We have this crazy vision that Henderson can be reborn, and putting our little money and mouths where our hearts are. I love it!
And I’ll bet you didn’t know my wife was from Drewry (where we live) and we inherited a small parcel of land there in rich Warren County. And my home in Drewry is 2 miles from Vance County’s northern border. Yes truly a metropolis for anyone who is familiar with Drewry. :o) HaHa … Anonymous you’re just soooo…. funny!
Hey really … if you would like to help us rebuild Henderson …. we could really use your help. What do you say?
Gary, you get the permits I’ll get heavy equipment, (bulldozers, front-end loaders, graders) plus recycle and trash dumpster. Together we can scrape some of the blight out of Henderson. The only way you can redeem Henderson is the physical removal of the blight. Time will heal the land. Erecting high-end gated communities where Section 8 now stands would start the financial recovery of the city. Just reopen Soul City if all you are going to offer is the same failed system we have today.
