This is Deaf History Month, running from Tuesday through April 15th, including three key dates for the nation’s deaf community. The first school in America for deaf students opened its doors in 1817. In 1864, President Lincoln signed the charter of what today is Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. And this week in 1988, Gallaudet selected its first deaf president. Today in the U.S., there are 36 million disabled people. Of these, 10.2 million have some degree of hearing impairment, ranging from difficulty hearing conversations to total hearing loss. Those age 65 and over are the most likely to have hearing problems. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.

Yesterday’s paper and today’s editorial called the $53 per month water cost minor. However the math suggests that the overrun is at best 18% and at worst 51.5% over the advertised cost.
In the private sector even the 18% would be considered significant and likely enable individuals to void their agreements.
Someone needs to break out the costs applicable to water, construction, etc. to show where the money is going and making sure that the overrun isn’t really a revenue generating tool. Also, a comparison of the costs (non-capital) to other customers in different areas.
Gov. Perdue has said that Fracking for natural gas is safe. What’s she been smoking?
Not only will fracking allow infiltration of potential contaminants into the ground water (not just from the natural gas), it could also cause changes in ground water flow, wells, etc.
I’m a conservative and all for energy dependency, but this is a bad idea.
When I first moved to Henderson in 2000 my water/sewage/garbage bill was $35 per month. It is now $65 a month and my habits of usage have not changed. My income, however, is lower. Other than receiving a nice trash can, I don’t see any other benefits from the increased cost. I see the same flooded streets, the same strewn trash and the same falling apart water & sewage system. Oh, yes, and the same smelly water with visible solids in the filters I use to make the water drinkable.
With recent questions about the connection between Fracking and earth quakes, I would like to see a moratorium on Fracking until all questions have been answered.
