Home in Henderson welcomes the arrival of April on Sunday, April 1st. We will be featuring a very special selection of contributed articles on our website in honor of the coming of April.
And to celebrate, we will hold another giveaway! Another $20.00 gift certificate to Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill is up for grabs to a lucky commenter.
Here’s the rules.
From now, now being the publishing of this post at Thursday 12:01am on March 29th, until Monday night April 2nd, 11:59pm, make a comment on any article on our website to enter.
It doesn’t matter if you make one comment, or 10, you will only be entered one time to the contest. We’d love it if you made 10 comments of course!
I will then arrange some oddball way of choosing a random winner on Tuesday morning and post the result to our website on Tuesday.
The winner will receive instructions in their registered email address on how to claim their prize, and we have a simple method that enables them to do so anonymously.
Let me repeat, if you didn’t quite grasp what I’ve written. Home in Henderson will be celebrating April 1st, the Greeks called it the first day of April, otherwise known as the #1 Day on the April calendar. In Roman Numerals that is April I. Not to be confused with April 1.
We hope to encourage discussion of timely issues during our contest, so here’s your incentive.
If you have anything you’d like to contribute to our 1st day of April celebration, please do so by emailing your article to submit@homeinhenderson.com and mark it as April 1st Celebration.
This is 2 in a row giveaways for Greenway’s. Next contest we’ll have a different sponsor. If you’d like to sponsor a contest please contact me as well, get cheap exposure to your business to over 5,500 readers monthly! Past contests included giveaways from George’s Restaurant, Sachs Woodcrafts, and Don Lorenzo’s Mexican Restaurant.
Happy anniversary HnH….good to have you around!
Prudence,
How was that free lunch you won in the last contest?
Good luck there Prudence on another victory.
Good memory, One Voice. April is indeed the 1 year anniversary of HiH in its current form. However, that will be celebrated on the actual anniversary date, which is April 11th. HiH in its overall form began February 6th, 2005.
This is a separate celebration, just for April 1st being April 1st and nothing to do with our anniversary. I’m not really sure why we’re celebrating April 1st, just seems like a fun thing to do.
Is this a APRIL FOOLS test?
Dangy, the part of this posting in quotes was crafted last week in response to your posting on March 21. I did not post my comment last week because I thought it best to let the subject rest. When I read about this month’s contest I thought this was a good time to encourage ideas for slogans the EDC could consider. (For the history refer to http://homeinhenderson.com/2012/03/15/michael-bobbitt-notes-from-the-peanut-gallery-edc-meeting/ )
“Dangy, you are objecting to my use of a list of suggested slogans that describe our hometown, yet you have not offered anything to counter those slogans. As you remember from the March 14, EDC Board meeting we learned the Granville County slogan says they are the crown of the triangle. At the same meeting it was tacitly agreed that our potential slogan ‘North of the Triangle’ was a little white lie although someone said it is bold. This has had me wondering if a bold lie is better than the truth.”
Dangy, I am encouraging you and others to post your ideas for a slogan the EDC would consider bold, truthful, and giving an inspiring image of our hamlet. Dangy, you might win the HiH prize with your posting and break bread with prudence. Or even better yet, win recognition by the EDC for your slogan.
Thank you for the invitation. I had actually started a list of 30 fun and positive slogans for our town and will try to finish and post in a day or two. The question is, will you bother to go around town and ask folks their opinions on good names for our town? I understand that paying the EDC to spend time creating slogans is lame and worthy of parody but sometimes the equally lame, pointless and destructive dialogue about Henderson becomes too much. And it really bothered me, going around town with that ugly list polling people counters all the good work of attending and reporting unbiased on govt. affairs. There is a lot to be proud of and thankful for here.
Dangy,
You post the list and I will do a better job surveying our fellow citizens than I did with the first list. What if we (you in anonymity) and I ask James Edwards and Phil Hart to both publish the combined lists in their respective media? Using the results of their respective data collections tabulate the top three, four or five slogans for presentation to the EDC. All we should ask is that those making a selection do it with only one media the local paper or HiH. Before anyone gets overly excited a strong word of caution, I have not asked Mr .Edwards or Mr. Hart if they would be interested in publishing the list and collecting the raw data.
Mudball – April Fools? Did anyone mention April Fools? I didn’t mention April Fools. Think of it more of a warning than a test.
Michael Bobbitt and Dagney – What you’re discussing is exactly the type of thing I’d like HiH to be able to facilitate.
Here’s my idea: I’ll create a post inviting people to come up with slogans. We’ll limit 1 slogan per comment. Users can submit how ever many slogans they want, just as long each is in its own comment. Users are then able to like or dislike each individual slogan. After some time, a week? We’ll get the top x (10 or 20?) slogans by easily seeing the number of likes on each one and we’ll create a poll with just those slogans. The poll would be able to be voted on by anyone, not just HiH members. Or we could just not worry with counting the likes and make a big poll with all the submissions.
Whatever idea you guys come up with, just let me know and it will be implemented.
BTW all,
I met with John Barnes today for about 30 minutes. John seemed very down to earth, and eager to start working in his position. We didn’t have time to just discuss things, it was all more work related and rushed, as he’s trying to get ready for his new position, but I feel comfortable and ready to meet with John when he’s ready to discuss ideas.
Also while I’m here I have both the BoE and BoC agenda packets for their Monday meeting next week, I’ll get these scanned in and posted tomorrow.
I have not met Mr. Barnes as of yet but look forward to.
All for slogans for Vance County or the city so long as they are positive in nature. Just do not see where negativity plays any kind of productive role in life let alone politics.
Mojo Risin, a positive slogan can be an inspiring slogan. The slogans offered by Rusty should inspire those in power to see what the people of Vance County actually think.
I think a good slogan would be ” The Top of the Triangle” or ‘The Tip of the Triangle’. Keep up the positive comments!
I heard from some friends who were sailing up around Clarksville about some large barges moored in a back channel. They said the barges that size were not customary for the lake and asked me if I knew anything about them. I don’t. Does anyone on HiH might have a clue.
“If the triangle was a pyramid, we’d be on top.”
I do not think everything is totally bad and awful here, whether it be the City or the County we are talking about. We have some good things happening within this place. Of course there is much room for improvement but that does not mean we all have to bash & dash on HiH in an effort to vent. Yes, we have too many ‘slums’ and the tax rate is a bit steep but how about we all jump in and work with our local government to make this place better and fix this stuff?
Michael, as for the barges I can remember seeing those out on the lake just as you described several times dating back to the 1980’s. I always thought it had something to do with the Army Corps. of Engineers and work they were doing around the reservoir.
