Monday Open Line

I’ve already posted the White House Weekly Address yesterday since it was an Easter message, but in case you missed it here it is again: President Obama offers his warmest greetings to all who are celebrating Easter and Passover this weekend, and reflects on the common thread of humanity that binds us all together.

But not posted yet is the West Wing Week.   West Wing Week: “Spring Break Edition” – This week, the President hosted a summit with North American leaders, addressed the Associated Press, signed his economic report, the STOCK Act and the JOBS Act, and held an Easter Prayer Breakfast

The Civil War Battle of Shiloh — sometimes called Pittsburgh Landing — was fought starting on March 6th, 150 years ago.  It was the bloodiest battle of the war to that point, costing both sides combined an estimated 23,000 casualties.  The huge number of killed, wounded and missing were a shock to northern and south alike. Some histories have stated that the casualties of this single battle exceeded the total of those suffered in America’s three previous wars.  The cost in lives lost also ended any thoughts that the war would be won easily and end shortly.  Some 3 million men served on both sides.  Battle deaths and disease claimed at least 364,000 on the Union side alone.  Confederate losses are unknown.  You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
