Sixty-five years ago April 16th and 17th, the nation’s worst industrial accident devastated Texas City, Texas. Tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer were being loaded into a French ship when fire broke out. About an hour later, the ship exploded, causing catastrophic damage and loss of life. The blast damaged another ship that blew up the next day. It’s estimated that some 600 people were killed, another 5,000 injured, and a third of the town’s houses had to be condemned. Property damage in today’s terms was just over a billion dollars. In the U.S., 3,600 workers are killed each year on the job and another 5 million injured enough to seek medical treatment. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.

If anyone heard WIZS 1450 Town Talk today you would have had a blast listening to the 3 candidates for Ward 3 City Council Seat. Daeke gave typical politicians speech….elliott touted her work as a “certified gang expert”…..and geraldine champion was for lack of a better word called out for her involvement in the Weed/Seed fiasco. I heard Mrs. Elliott mention the word Fraud several times and it seems like the ‘dancing bear’ was dancing all around the fiasco better known as Weed/Seed. With a 30 million dollar budget, can you seriously see her having a vote on what is best for the city residents? WOW!!!! I guess you don’t need ANY qualifications in order to run for city council.
Unfortunately I heard only parts of todays Town Talk–but heard enought to want to cry–So very sad that it is all rhetoric from one who has been on the council and wants to remain.
The others are too lame to even critique–in my opinion.
I listened to today’s edition of Town Talk. Thank you to WIZS for hosting the candidates city council, Ward 3.
It is very real to me that all three candidates want better things for our town. I can say that was a positive.
However, it is totally clear that two of the candidates do not have the level of knowledge necessary to lead this town. I am not going to talk about the lack of verbal etiquette displayed or outright redundancy of statements. I am proud that people want to see things get better, but two of the candidates did not have any substance behind their thoughts.
I’m shocked.
All, if you’d like to listen to today’s town talk episode, you may do so on the WIZS website (designed by me, shameless plug) at http://www.wizs.com/town-talk/
I heard the Town Talk candidate forum on the web. IMO, there was only one qualified person.
I also listened to the entire show and I could picture geraldine champion squirming in her seat when the caller asked about the Weed/Seed fiasco. I think Ms. Elliott used the word FRAUD!! Now here’s a candidate who has had an opportunity to do things with public monies and $$$$ had to be returned to the FEDS b/c of mismanagement, etc. Is this someone you want leading you on your council body? I don’t!!!! especially since she can’t dance…I heard they named her the ‘dancin’ bear’ at one of the Meet Me in the Street festivities. Good luck Ms. Elliott. I hope you beat the other 2 b/c one isn’t qualified and the other seems to have ‘friends’ who need politicial favors. It’s time for a NEW DIRECTION……and not the DEAD END RD. that sammy had the voters go down last time!!!!!
I have listened to last Wednesday’s town talk. First I was pleased to hear that the radio station prepared for this program and the moderator was prepared.
Of the three speakers only Mr. Daeke was able to articulate answers to the questions posed.
I hope we get to hear a similar debate for the other two contested races. Wizs is offering more than we read in the paper.
Deception is a good name for you. You accuse Ms. Coffey of playing both sides of the fence on joint venture. She did. She voiced her concern on it with several other council memebers, they wrote several letters to the county, discussed new joint venture formulas, and then the county said no. The majority of the council did not pursue it. I think she has explored both sides and sees the issue clearly.
You accuse Daeke of giving political favors. Yep, hes helping make sure the new bed and breakfast ordinance works for those affected.( i know because I am one of them) He made sure the folks in Ward 3 know about the grant proposal to help get their sewer hooked up for free. And I met a man in church yesterday who said he was helping get a lot cleaned up in his neighborhood. Sure are a lot of “political” favors there.
Yes, deception is a good moniker.
Deception, you’re going to base someone’s ability to be in the city council on if they can dance or not? Should we have a dance-off for all the candidates?
Mingo:I didn’t accuse Daeke of anything but since you mention an accusation…what about inscoe’s daughters having a vested interest in the apartments that are over some of the downtown businesses? If I’m not mistaken,he didn’t vote on that issue b/c of this but I may be wrong. I said Daeke gave typical political rhetoric saying what you think the voters want to hear and forgetting about it if they elect you. Same thing your girl coffey did..How many things did she say she would do if only she were to get elected? Too many to name! Here’s a quick question for you mingo; name 1 thing that she has done to better the city residents since she got on the council!! The proof is in the “puddin”!!!
As far as Ward 3 goes, if I’m not mistaken a caller asked ms. geraldine champion about her involvement with Weed/Seed and she said she was involved. I’m not sure to what extent but I did read the article that the Daily Dispatch had on the Weed/Seed mismanagement of $$$ and I pose this question to anyone who considers voting for her…..The city’s budget is 30 million give or take…Do you want her having a VOTE on any issue with that much $$$ at stake after her dealings with the Weed/Seed fiasco? I say Ms. Elliott may bring something ‘new’ to the table and not something ‘self-serving’!! Only time will tell!!!! Remember current council members….facts don’t LIE…but people do!!!!! Good Luck to all the challengers b/c this “new direction” has the city of Henderson going down a 1-way street with no outlet unless it seeps through the ground like some of the sewage is doing in certain areas of town!!!!
