Yesterday was National Hanging Out Day. No it’s not a special day for friends to hang out together for a few beers — although that could also happen — but the idea is to educate people about saving energy. The goal is to get people to hang their clothes out to dry and not use electric or gas-powered clothes dryers to do the job. Those who advocate using clotheslines point out that the practice saves energy, makes clothes smell better and last longer, avoids fires, and perhaps best of all, saves money. Across the nation, there are just over 130 million housing units. More than 101 million of these homes have a clothes drier installed. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
Discuss and more on the Open Lines!
has anyone heard this about the water for the county? even if you don’t hook up to it you will have to pay because the line will run by your home. i enjoy my well and don’t want city water.
Since the inception of this project property owners were free to choose to sign up or not and there is no charge for not signing up. That is the open public statement. All one needs to do is look at how the city is forcing residence to pay for sewer that is not connected to their own home to understand how the county leaders intend to make the county wide water project financially feasible for those who do commit.
Originally water would cost the home owner $35.00 a month for 5,000 gallons. Now it will cost the home owner $53.00 a month for the same 5,000 gallons. By the time the pipe is in the ground across the county every home owner will be paying for direct use of county water regardless of your connection or not.
that’s just crazy. i don’t understand how they can force a person to pay for something they aren’t using or want. if that’s the case i should be paying for cable, etc.., that other people have in my area that i don’t want. i just don’t understand this town.
the difference is cable is a private for profit, you chooses to acquire it or not, and its put in the ground with private money. water or sewer, is for the public, and even though you might not want it, in the city, due to density reasons and sanitation of treating sewage in neighborhods, it makes more sense from a public health view to have everyone on the system. Imagine your next door neighbor has a leaking sewer line 50 ft from your patio. Hot summer nights are not as much fun tring to sit outdoors.
but to correct the misinformation, the city dropped th sewage availability fee of $12 they were proposing, I believe its changed to trying to get people on with a new grant, and offering a reduced price to hook on, if you choose. They are waiting to see how many people actually do. Incentives first.
Just was in a local business on Garnett St. that makes shirts/hats for local ball teams and an employee of the Vance County Housing Authority(or so his shirt & truck said) had to have the POLICE called to the business b/c he was being so rude/disrespectful to the owners of the business. From what little bit I heard it was simply that his “shirts” weren’t ready and he claimed that his “team” had a game tonight! Nice coach he must be to lead a group of young men/women when he doesn’t even know how to act himself!!!! THANK GOODNESS nobody I know plays on this idiot’s team.
I think he needs to be reported to the County Manager or whomever the Vance Co. Housing Authority falls under. It was for lack of a better word…….CLASSLESS!!!!!!
How many are aware that our phone bills have a “Universal Connectivity Fee”–we’re paying for people who get subsidized to have a phone–and we have no choice.
I think(regarding the water0 is that if they come by your house and you elect to install the ‘tap’ and don’t use the water, you will be charged a monthly fee, even if you don’t even use the water
it’s crazy. (about your phone) just another example of our lovely government. i appreciate all the input about the water.
i hate another thing being forced on us. i have always lived in the country. never had city water always well water. even b-4 i moved to vance county. by having a garden, flower beds, etc.., we use alot of water. can imagine what the water bill would be.
just another way to get more money out of our pockets.
