It has been said that people don’t know what is good for them. It can certainly be said that people don’t always do what is in their best interest.
Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, The drum beat of this election is the economy stupid. Jobs. We need to put people to work. So the Republican Legislature in N.C. cuts educational budget and puts teachers and aids out of work.  That did not seem to make any sense. The hall-cent sales tax would have provided funding for those teachers and aids.
That is particularly self-destructive because good jobs depend on good education and the reduction of teachers makes our education efforts harder.
Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, but we don’t do what the people who are in that business tell us will help bring jobs. Chambers of Commerce across the state, Durham, Charlotte, Wake, and others said that Amendment One will make it much more difficult to bring the young businesses to our state. Amazon and Google have been considering moving to North Carolina. They are now reconsidering.
Job, Jobs, Jobs, Granville County in their industrial site almost had a major corporation landed. The company would have had between 1500 and 2000 jobs. The Company wanted some incentives from the state, but the Republican leadership was not willing to give the incentives. The jobs went to Georgia who did give the company the help it wanted.
Some times you have to take a moment and do something that helps you get where you want to be.
To have good jobs you need a well educated work force . Does our present school system provide this ? Do the people of this community demand this ? I wonder.
So why did the legislature focus primarily on cutting the Education Budget? Seems the answer to your question is that we do not really demand good education. We would rather cut taxes than pay for a top notch education for all our children.
