One of the most versatile cowboys of the Old West was born on this date in 1906 in Utah. In his 89 years, Earl Bascom won just about every award a cowboy could win and invented the side delivery rodeo chute, the first hornless bronc saddle, and the first one-handed bareback rigging. He also produced the first rodeo performed at night under electric lights. After his active riding career, Bascom became an internationally known western artist and sculptor. In the U.S., rodeos are attended by close to 3 million people each year. About 14 percent go to these performances on a regular basis. Can someone in this county please tell me why the urge to throw trash on the ground and out of car windows is so great? This is one of the most trashiest places on earth I do believe. I wish you would at least make it past my house before the urge hits! Trash is everywhere!
Mudball : Section 8. Need I say more?
Mudball, you have hit on a subject that is very dear to me. I have never understood why this county is so nasty and trashy. There is trash along the roadsides everywhere; not only the back roads but major highways as well. The highway dept. lets the grass get so high, and then when they cut it, now you have thousands of peices of little trash everywhere! I have a job that requires me to travel in the four county area and I don’t even have to see a county line boundary marker to know when I get in Vance, all I do is see and increase in the road side trash. I know you will always have people throwing out trash, but you can at least try to fight it. Just get out and notice the trash along the interstate; US#1, US 158….these are roads that possibly a CEO might travel looking for a place to locate his business. What do you think he sees?
I have tried to complain to commisioners, but no luck. I see other counties constantly have the prison dept. picking up trash. Why is our county differerent? I am sure there are some who would love to get out of their over crowded jail cell and enjoy some fresh air and change of scenary for a day. What about sentencing these repeat offenders to 40 hours of community service by picking up trash?
Tell me who to call about this and I’ll be glad to start the ball rolling.
I was traveling through the city just yesterday and I am amazed at the amount of litter and trash bordering and laying in the streets of Henderson. Dirty, nasty place we live in! I’m all for inmates working to pay their debt to society.
Are you kidding? They can’t do that! Inmates are the voting public in Vance! (I remember I used to see them picking up trash maybe 9 or so years ago — but never more recently).
But Betterworld, that is the question I have(or had) for our city/county leaders. “Why don’t they get out and pick up trash?” I see inmates all the time picking up trash in Granville and Franklin. The sheriff’s dept in Franklin Co. has even got several vans that take the inmates from the jail out to pick up trash. I did see some NCDOT, paid workers; along US1 the other day. So why not put the inmates out there doing that.
If you guys think this is worst place for trash you are living a very sheltered life. You need to get out of town a little more often. One Voice, do the the counties were you saw inmates picking up the trash have a State prison facility? Besides the cost of using inmates to collect trash there is the exponential increase in the probability for contraband (cell phones, drugs, cash money) to enter the secured confines of a prison. Betterworld, maybe two months ago I saw indications that an inmate crew had worked along Thomas Road.
Funds for mowing operations along our State roadways has been slashed, it was part of the recent urge to cut government budgets. You don’t like the high grass and weeds along the roadways I will offer you two solutions. Demand that the legislature re-instate the funds needed to return to pre-budget slashing times. Or do as I have seen one prominent local business person do himself; get your own mower out and cut the grass.
not sure that it helps, but if i see a a-hole toss out even just a cigarette butt … i fill out the swat a litter bug thing on the DOT’s web site:

SS,
Thanks for the information.
Mr. Micheal Bobbit, couldn’t help but to reply back to you. I do not live a sheltered life but just because other areas and counties want to live in a pig sty, should we? If inmates are out picking up trash, I see your concern about contraband BUT that is why they are under armed guards and why they search them before and after they get on the bus….DUH!
Now about the mowing. I don’t own that land beside the highway, the state does. I keep my yard looking nice and cut what is in front of my yard and that is all. The local business man that gets out and cuts grass around town does it for his own pocketbook and trying to make a name for hisself and the many businesses and internet sweepstake stores he runs.
