Among the most heated topics being discussed in the current stage of the presidential election campaign is health reform, more properly the Affordable Health Care Act. Most recent figures, released last fall for the year 2010, show just under 50 million people without health insurance — that’s 16.3 percent of the total U.S. population. For children under 18, almost 10 percent were not covered by health insurance. The figures show a variation among regions of the country. The largest number without health insurance live in the South. Those living in the Northeast region are the most apt to have health insurance. Profile America is produced by the U.S. Census Bureau: Measuring America–People, Places, and Our Economy.

Does anyone know how long the ‘substance abuse’ building has been on Beckford Drive behind the Social Security Bldg? Due to confidentiality I will only say that I found it very “interesting” that an ex-county commissioner seemed to be ‘visiting’ that location. Last time he/she posted on HiH, he/she claimed they were living in Va. Beach. Only N Hunnerson!!! It’s disheartening to see people born with silver spoon in their mouth and they still can’t make anything of their lives due to alcohol/drugs/etc. SAD….SAD…SAD!!!!
Deception,
I do not know the answer to your question. Had you been looking in late May you might have seen 19 of your fellow citizens going into the building. We were on a tour. You sir/madam have no clue as to why the person you saw was entering the building. The person you saw may have been there to help someone or for help them self.
Substance abuse is not something most people quell without help and support any more than most people can quell a cancer that ravages their bodies without help and support.
Diseases and disorders have no regard for one’s birth status or life’s achievements. Let the scientist argue the subtleties differentiating disease of addiction vs addiction disorders as they search for the means of prevention. In the meantime you and I may be thankful that at conception we chose the right DNA; otherwise it might have been you or I needing the help and support provided by the good people who work with those impaired by substance abuse.
Reading the Green Party of America platform with interest, very interesting to say the least. I think they have a few good ideas but most are WAYYYYY in left field such as the part I am including. Wonder how they would fair in this county and surrounding counties? Go to their web site for further reading. I think they have some very good points on Women’s Rights. I think our President may be actually a Green Party member instead of a Democrat.
2. Racial Discrimination
The community of people of African ancestry whose family members were held in chattel slavery in what is now the United States of America have legitimate claims to reparations including monetary compensation for centuries of human rights violations, including the Transatlantic slave trade now recognized by the United Nations as a ‘crime against humanity’. As our Nation has done in the past with respect to the Choctaw, the Lakota, the Lambuth, and more recently for Japanese Americans and the European Jewish community, Reparations are now due to address the debt still owed to descendants of enslaved Africa
We commit to full and complete reparations to the African community of this nation for the past four hundred plus years of ********, slavery, land-loss, destruction of original identity and the stark disparities which haunt the present evidenced in unemployment statistics, substandard and inadequate education, higher levels of mortality including infant and maternal mortality and the practice of mass incarceration. We recognize that reparations are a debt (not charity) that is owed by our own and other nations and by the corporate institutions chartered under our laws to a collective of people. We believe that the leadership on the question of what our nation owes to this process of right ought to come from the African American community, whose right to self-determination and autonomy to chart the path to healing we fully recognize.
We understand that until significant steps are taken to reverse the ongoing abuses; to end the criminalization of the Black and Brown communities, to eradicate poverty, to invest in education, health care and the restoration and protection of human rights, that it will be impossible to repair the continuing damage wrought by the ideology of *************** which permeates the governing institutions of our Nation.
While consensus is still evolving on what would constitute full and complete reparations, we support the following initial steps.
We support the creation of a claim of action and a right to recover inherited wealth and other profits accumulated from the slave trade for the benefit of a reparations trust fund.
We will initiate the repeal of the slave clauses that survive today in the U.S. Constitution.
We will work to restore lands stolen through a variety of tactics including: violence, terrorism and the discriminatory access to operating capital which together has robbed Black Farmers and the broader community of their lands.
We support the release of all political prisoners held by the USA. It is time that the political frame-ups, the prosecutorial misconduct and the racist application of police power which pass for justice in our country be buried and those victimized by these abuses of state power be given their lives back.
We will support existing Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as well as new and existing Education and Development Funds.
We support efforts to overcome the effects of over 200 years of racial discrimination.
We call for an end to official support for any remaining symbols of slavery and specifically call for the removal of the Confederate battle flag from all government buildings.
We condemn the practice of racial profiling by law enforcement agencies, which are guilty of stopping motorists, harassing individuals, or using unwarranted violence against suspects with no other justification than race or ethnic background.
We favor strong measures to combat official racism in the forms of police brutality directed against people of color.
We support effective enforcement of the Voting Rights Act, including language access to voting.
We oppose discriminatory English-only pressure groups. We call for a national language policy that would encourage all citizens to be fluent in at least two languages.
We strongly support the vigorous enforcement of civil rights laws, the aggressive prosecution of **********s, and the strengthening of legal services for the poor.
Mr. Bobbitt,
Sorry but I do know what I speak of but due to liability issues I won’t go into details. I would simply say that I don’t come here for any other reason than to give 1st hand info.(i.e.”sweepstakes”) and to make the public aware that if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, well you know the rest. Vance County is full of legalized drug dealing doctors who will prescribe narcotics for anything from a sore back to a hang nail. Until the Govt. goes after these “pain clinics” with more restrictions then we will have lost more people to drugs that are obtained legally with a prescription but illegally on the black market. If you were touring as you say, I’m sure you were privy to what types of addictions the Center deals with more often than not. I guarantee you it’s not alcohol or crack cocaine. I’d be willing to bet it’s prescription meds. Weren’t you at the mtg. at the Hospital when the Police Chief said that they deal with numerous complaints of vehicles being broken into and meds. being stolen b/c they were in plain sight? I think you were sitting in the back, right corner if my memory serves me correctly.
I posted the original to throw out a topic of why not drug testing anyone who is in public office! I mean with some of the comments and decisions they make, it wouldn’t surprise me if some of them failed. Would it you?
Deception you are so full of it! The only thing you do here is try to stir people up! Someone gives you a straight up comment all you can do is throw bags of do-do around.
I agree that compensation is due to those enslaved in the past. I suggest that those ancestors of freed slaves go first to those who captured them and sold them into slavery. In almost every case of enslavement, ones own nationality/race did the capturing and the money deals. Native Americans were most certainly victims of foreign invaders and their compensation is like one spit in the pond of wrongs. African Americans should perhaps spit in Africa’s pond and see what happens.
If you are a citizen of the United States, you are one of the luckiest people on earth, regardless of how you or your ancesters came to be here. If one of your great, great, great, great, great, great……grandparents were a slave, that should be a source of pride. They helped to build the country. Slavery is abominable and is not part of our culture today. The system that our Founding Fathers created has led to more individual freedom, liberty and a higher standard of living than any other time in history. Reparations paid to people that were never alive when the crime was committed is pure greed and impossible to mitigate. We all should be thankful and proud to live in America, billions of people around the world would trade places to have the opportunity that Americans have.
Very well said, Dagny and Copper
The first 2 sentences of Deception’s first post are so crass and are a broach of confidentiality to even mention. It is pure conjecture or loose lips from someone employeed there which is highly unethical, and even if true, none of Deception’s business as this person does not hold public office now. Deception should keep her/his nose out of other’s personal business and consider a check up from the neck up for their own ugly and hurtful actions – why would you want to be so mean and make such a useless post? I am no big fan either, but someone possibly seeking help deserves support not ridicule.
Dagny: Unless you can’t read…I didn’t mention any name nor sex of the individual. You must know him/her personally. My thing is that if you can come on HiH and “toot your own horn” when you want publicity or votes….then you open yourself to a PUBLIC profile and no longer can remain anonymous. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. I didn’t say who was there b/c it wasn’t my place. I was trying to prove a point that some of you in Henderson can’t seem to get….It’s not a black thang..nor is it a white thang…..It’s a DISEASE thang. Get your head out of the sand and read the posts again. If you need further explanation…..call your local representative. Only N Hunnerson!!!
Deception; you must be a complete and certifiable *****! Anyone who has read HIH in the past and can remember it was hot yesterday, can also know EXACTLY who you were talking about. There is only 1 EX in the County Commissioner Board since this blog was created. The last change to the board by election was when Wallace Edwards decided not to run and Brown was elected! You really are an imbecile.
I clearly remember some time ago when the adult store was being considered on 158 people on here were going to sit across the road and publish the license plate numbers of those who visited. It was such a great idea to do that, and now you’re ragging on Deception for a similar idea?
As for the ex-commissioner, if he was going in there for an appointment, why talk bad about that? Good for him, and for anyone else who gets help for their problems. You / We need to encourage that.
If the ex-comissioner was going in there for a personal interest trip, or to do work there, or who knows what else and you’re accusing him of going for addiction thats just as ignorant.
Now, Deception also brings up a good point though, and I know this to be true as well that prescription pills are a very much abused drug in our county. As far as I know, there are no investigations on the sources of these drugs. Not just the drug dealers, but the doctors the drug dealers are getting the pills from. They have to come from a pharmacy / doctor’s orders? Do the police follow up with the pill bottle labels and see where these drugs are coming from? I don’t recall any reports of a doctors office or pharmacy being broken into and having drugs stolen from them…
SwampThang or Swampy; evidently you must know of the male/female I spoke of? Is it a crime to witness someone walking into a building unless they are stealing something I would assume the answer is “NO”. The real problem is that Henderson has too many puppets and not enough string. Also was the issue of addiction and varying types. All are bad…gambling is an addiction but it can usually be done under the cover of darkness and no side effects are visable(other than a bad credit score, no money,etc.). Alcoholism is an addiction as well but has Health Side Effects that can lead to liver disease to name one. Why not go after the Doctor Shops who give out Controlled Substances for little to nothing being wrong with a patient. I overheard a conversation while waiting on my blood pressure meds. at a local pharmacy just last week between an elderly black lady and a young white male. They weren’t being discreet about what they were discussing b/c I heard what the lady was waiting for to be filled and I heard her tell what she wanted to ‘get for them”. Talk about ignorance….It was quite a few people in the pharmacy and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who heard the conversation. Cut off the Doctor Shops…Pain Clinics, etc. and the # of controlled substances on the streets will decrease w/o a shadow of a doubt. One thing that less informed people fail to realize is that the “stuff” given by the Doctors often is the gateway drug to much harder things such as heroin, meth, etc. So……SwampDude hopefully if he/she was just ‘visiting’ he/she can get his/her act straight before it’s too late. My advice would be for you to pray for him/her because the power of prayer is a lot stronger than some of life’s temptations.
P.S. Tell her/him Good Luck!!!
I’m addicted to Skittles.
Deception – first your spying, now you’re eavesdropping. Too funny. Have a great day!
Dagwhoever: It’s called being keenly aware of your surroundings. Remember that when you venture off your computer life into a Walmart or Food Lion. Lots of purse snatchings and shootings taking place in H-Town. Enjoy your Friday evening web-surfing. I’m off to catch a bigger fish!!
That was a joke, D, don’t you see the humor? Why don’t you change your handle to Hatin’ on Henuson?
As previously stated, Deception ( an apt name for this person due to using deception to cover their PROVEN eavesdropping/nosiness), has an IQ of a door ****. He/She wants everyone to really believe that he/she just HAPPENS to see/overhear the drivel they write. Notice how he/she quickly changed the conversation in their last post? He/she wrote that an EX-COMMISSIONER of Vance County who now supposedly lives in another state was seen etc. etc. Now I ask you all ;HOW MANY EX-COMMISSIONERS LIVE OUTSIDE VANCE COUNTY ARE THERE? HOW MANY LOCAL POLITICIANS NOT STATE OFFICE HOLDERS, HAVE EVER POSTED ON HIH? Call your next case,me thinks a village has lost its’ IDIOT! Can you imagine this Neanderthal actually playing with sharp objects?
