Beginning on this date in 1874, the largest swarm of Rocky Mountain locusts ever recorded blackened the skies from the Dakotas to Texas and stripped farm fields in minutes. The swarm is estimated to have been 1,800 miles long and 110 miles wide. The locusts not only ate crops but ate the wool off of living sheep and even brought trains to a halt. While not as large, similar swarms continued for several years. Then, in one of the greatest ecological mysteries, they simply disappeared, never to return. Today’s farmers don’t have to contend with such massive attacks but still have a large variety of pests to contend with. To ward off such damage, U.S. farmers use $11.5 billion worth of pesticides each year. Profile America is in its 16th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.

My heart goes out to everyone victimized by the shooting in Colorado. What an awful event.
Mr. Risin,
I agree a very tragic event. We need to take a collective moment of silence for all those affected directly by this tragic event.
I agree, Michael.
and when you go off to your various Churches this morning be sure to pray for the lil’ girl who lost her life b/c some idiot decided to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking and getting intoxicated. There’s an old Indian saying that says “shake the ‘bone’ to the ‘bone'” which now translates to something along the lines of a “wake-up call”. Seeing that lil’ girls lifeless body being taken from the vehicle involved with the drunk driver was enough to shake your ‘bones…to the bone”! I guess GOD needed another lil’ angel b/c I have been struggling with trying to figure out WHY? I find solace in that GOD has a plan….and he doesn’t make mistakes!!!!
P.S. If you have a loved one with whom you haven’t shared just how much they mean to you lately, try to do it today!! I learned last night firsthand that you never know when your ticket will be punched. Enjoy your Sunday Services!
And remember that there are serial drunk drivers who still have their license.
The poor child, she never had a chance. . We must enforce the laws–the officers try but lawyers and judges keep giving the offenders second chances.
