Henderson Collegiate Hosting an Instrument Drive

Going into its third year of operation, Henderson Collegiate is delighted to announce the addition of a new Band Program to the school.

Since the school’s opening in 2010, the staff, students, and families of Henderson Collegiate have accomplished much. Students have entered the school each year below grade level and grown to achieve on the same level as top-performing peers. The school has worked with community members like the local Boys & Girls Club of America to build lasting partnerships that benefit students throughout the community. Students have visited colleges and completed community service projects and are building stronger work habits every day as they climb the mountain to college.

This year, the students of Henderson Collegiate are ready to take on a new challenge. Band Director Kasey Polk has come to the school bringing enthusiasm and a passion for music. A Teach for America corps member, Mr. Polk has been working hard to assemble a music curriculum from scratch and to plan out what is needed for the Band Program to hit the ground running.

The biggest need for the program is to acquire the necessary musical materials. Each year, Henderson Collegiate faces the difficult task of building new programs and curricula from the ground up. The Band Program, which is no exception to this rule, has already managed to acquire around 47 donated instruments and a handful of instrumental methods materials, but still has a long way to go in order to put an instrument in the hands of each of the 100 students who will begin the program this year.

After careful consideration, Mr. Polk has compiled the following list of materials and items that are needed immediately to jump-start the school’s Band Program:
