Attorney General Roy Cooper: Watch out for scammers trying to rip off veterans
Some people who claim they want to help military veterans get their veterans benefits may actually be out to rip them off. State and federal officials have reported hearing from veterans who have lost hundreds of dollars to scammers who promised to help them navigate the VA benefits process. In most cases, people must be accredited by the Veterans Administration (VA) in order to represent veterans seeking benefits, and they aren’t allowed to charge any money for their services unless …

Audience members at the premiere of “Arthur Newman,” which stars Oscar-winner Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, responded positively, while laughter and tears accompanied the debut of “Writers,” a dramatic comedy starring Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly. During the TIFF, Millennium Entertainment picked up U.S. distribution rights to “Writers.” Combined, the features had a direct in-state spend …

For hundreds of years, if someone ordered coffee, there was no question about what kind. Today, many Americans prefer their coffee decaffeinated. That choice began at the start of the last century, when Ludwig Roselius, a coffee merchant in Bremen, Germany, worked on removing caffeine from coffee beans. He described his process as “sans caffeine,” which he shortened to the familiar name “Sanka.” He moved to the U.S., and sold his process and trade name to a big firm in …

Senator Richard Burr Updates
As regular readers of this newsletter know, earlier this month, Senate Democrats introduced the Veterans Job Corps Act. The stated goals of this legislation were laudable enough – to help veterans secure jobs – but the reality of it was nothing more than campaign politics at its worst. This bill would have created temporary job opportunities for veterans, but rather than offer a pay-for provision, the Democrats chose to fund it using deficit spending. Deficit spending is in direct …
White House: One Final Flight Over America
Early Wednesday morning, space shuttle Endeavour took its final flight atop a jumbo jet at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. For three days, the shuttle rode piggyback to Los Angeles, California where it will begin its next mission as an educational display at the California Science Center. Earlier this year, two other retired shuttles dazzled crowds below as they made their way from Florida to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City. DC residents …

On September 18, 1851, the New York Times issued its first edition. And, on this date in 1690, the first newspaper in America was published for one day in …

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Protecting Taxpayers and Our Economy
The Second District got some good news this week when the North Carolina Department of Transportation changed course and announced they will now be taking the responsible step of analyzing the economic impact and burdens a toll on I-95 would have on our communities. After hearing from numerous constituents and businesses along the I-95 corridor, I submitted a letter to the Federal Highway Administration calling for an economic impact study back in February.
