Vance County Schools Information Session for Parents October 11th, and 23rd

Parents of students in Vance County Schools in the 10th and 11th grade are invited to attend an information session about upcoming test administrations for the PLAN and ACT tests.

The session is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, in the board room of the school system’s Administrative Services Center on Graham Avenue in Henderson.

All parents of high school sophomores and juniors are urged to attend.

School system personnel will share a Powerpoint presentation and written materials with parents to explain the tests and their purposes.

The PLAN test will be given to all 10th graders in local high schools on Tuesday, October 23. PLAN is a diagnostic assessment that indicates strengths and areas of need to provide a roadmap to success for North Carolina high school students. PLAN offers a mid-point assessment of academic progress toward college and career readiness and is the most powerful predictor of performance on the ACT. It can be used for course placement, including dual enrollment and more rigorous courses. PLAN also includes a career interest inventory and an educational/career plan component.

The ACT will be given to all local high school juniors on Tuesday, March 5. ACT test results are widely accepted by college admissions offices and considered an accurate gauge of classroom achievement. ACT results may be used at the high school level to identify students who need assistance with certain subject areas or academic skills, evaluate effectiveness of instruction, and make adjustments to curriculum to improve instruction. Colleges use the ACT for admissions decisions, course placement, academic advising and loans and scholarships.

The information session is designed to offer parents information to effectively help their children be successful on the tests.
