The first underwater tunnel built in the U.S. — New York City’s Holland Tunnel, running beneath the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey — opened for traffic 85 years ago today. Despite its age, the tunnel remains a key traffic artery serving the New York City area, carrying more than 33 million cars and trucks every year. It is named for Clifford Holland, the project’s first chief engineer, who died of a heart attack at the age of …
Elissa Yount: Chavasse Avenue News
The brush has been cut back on the southeast side of the intersection with William Street and when my husband saw two workmen there today, he went over to thank them for the improvement and came back with some astonishing news. They were Department of Transportation workers and said the project to widen Chavasse from William to Raleigh Road is finally going to take place. The sidewalk will be built and a wide berth will go over the tracks so …

White House Weekly Address: Extending Middle Class Tax Cuts to Grow the Economy
President Obama says that it’s time for Congress to pass the middle class tax cuts for 98 percent of all Americans. Both parties agree that this will give 98 percent of families and 97 percent of small businesses the certainty that will lead to growth, and so there is no reason to wait. On Tuesday, the American people voted for compromise and action, and the President calls on Congress to come together in that spirit to help create jobs and strengthen our economy …
SBA Helps Veterans Start, Grow and Expand Small Businesses
WASHINGTON – As the nation marks Veterans Day 2012, the U.S. Small Business Administration continues to build on its successful programs for America’s military veterans, helping tens of thousands of veterans each year with small business financing, comprehensive business training and counseling and access to federal contracts. “Around Veterans Day, our thoughts turn to the men and women who are currently serving in the Armed Forces, as well as to all veterans who have made sacrifices and served our country over …

It’s a time to celebrate one of life’s simple pleasures — it’s Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month. The stuff of America’s favorite sandwich, peanut butter was first offered to the public at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. But as we currently know it — with the peanuts roasted and the product churned like butter to be smooth and so the oil won’t separate — peanut butter didn’t appear on grocery shelves until 1922. While we each eat more than six …

Pictured below are the color guard and students from Triton High School, along with NC Rep. David Lewis, as we saw the veterans group off to Washington. The Second District is …

Attorney General Roy Cooper: Official looking letter isn’t what it claims to be
If you just glanced at a letter recently received by some North Carolinians, you’d assume that it was sent by the government. It says the Local Records Office can provide a copy of your deed (“…the only document that identifies you as a property owner…”) for $89. To spur you to act quickly, it also includes a “Please Respond By” date. But the Local Records Office is really just a rented mailbox in Raleigh. Your deed is kept on file …
Friday / Weekend Open Line
Forty-seven years ago today, an eerie darkness spread over much of the northeastern United States from Canada, beginning at 5:16 p.m. A massive electrical blackout caused by human error eventually enveloped 80,000 square miles, putting the health and safety of 30 million people at risk for up to 12 long hours. Even though the blackout of August 2003 affected more people, the 1965 outage is still the best remembered major blackout, as it was the first to make people aware …
Richard Brand: Some Common Problems
There are some friends of mine who have suggested that campaign “season” of 2011-2012 was the best economic stimulus anyone could have imagined. My friend worries about the up tick in unemployment when all these political advisers are no longer employed. That there was almost two billion dollars spent on the race for the President, one candidate for Senate in Connecticut spent more than forty million dollars of her own money, and who knows what kind of total spending across …

A simple device was patented this month in 1868 that helped change the course of history in the American West — barbed wire. Michael Kelly of Dekalb, Illinois invented the first practical such wire. He threaded little blade-shaped metal thorns onto one of two wires, then twisted them together. He called it “thorny fence,” based on Osage orange, a thorny plant from Texas. The double strand made the fence stand up to cattle, and livestock soon learned to steer clear …
