The Henderson City Council will hold it’s annual retreat next week, and are seeking public comments to be read during the retreat. Like we are doing for the Vance County Board of Commissioners retreat, we will compile our reader comments below and get to the council for possible inclusion.
What would you like to see the council address this year?
How did they do on last year’s objectives?
Suggestions for City Councils retreat. Below is list of suggestions for the City Council’s retreat that were copied from the list of ideas sent to the County Manager for consideration during the County Commissioners’ annual retreat.
Consolidate Data Centers – currently the Vance County School building has a data center that appears to have sufficient physical space and resources to accommodate the servers supporting the School District and Vance County, and the City of Henderson. City and County governments and the School District are three distinct non-competitive governmental bodies each with its own physical data center. The City Council should consider partnering with the School District and Vance County to establish a singular physical data center for all three. Cost savings benefits include UPS and climate controls, physical security, backup and recovery services, business continuity and disaster recovery planning.
Housing Authority – currently Vance County does not have a housing authority to manage government subsidized housing. City Council should consider encouraging County Commissioners to establish a housing authority similar to Granville and Durham Counties.
NC Amtrak service into Henderson – currently the North Carolina Department of Transportation operates Amtrak trains between Raleigh and Charlotte that include a car for transporting bicycles. This car encourages cyclist to use the train to travel to a stop then cycle off on day or weekend trips. City Council and County Commissioners should partner together to explore the costs and benefits to the City and the Vance County of a train traveling between Henderson and Raleigh especially for cyclists.
Puppy Mills – currently North Carolina is known to permit what is commonly called puppy mills. The City Council should partner with the County Commissioners to formally request the State legislature to establish standards for care and maintenance of breeding animals (such as dogs and cats) to prevent neglect and mistreatment of animals.
Scoters and Mopeds on Roadways – currently scoters and mopeds are allowed to travel along county roadways at a speed nearly 25% below posted maximum highway speed. City Council should partner with the County Commissioners to formally request the State legislature to prohibit scoters and mopeds on county roadways unless the roadway includes a lane designated for scoters and mopeds.
Please add your suggestions to this list.
