NCDOT hears from public on I-95 expansion, tolls

The N.C. Dept. of Transportation is holding public meetings in communities along the Interstate 95 corridor for attendees to learn about the results of the I-95 Economic Assessment, as well as the next steps in the process of improving the highway. Attendees will be able to discuss the study one-on-one with NCDOT officials in an informal setting and will also have the opportunity to submit written comments or questions.

The hearings will be held next week at the Robeson Community College Workforce Development Center in Lumberton and at Halifax Community College The Centre (Gallery) in Weldon. Hearings were also held Monday in Smithfield and yesterday in Wilson. The agency heard from about 4,000 people when it held meetings in communities along I-95 last year.

DOT says upgrades are needed along the entire 180 miles of I-95 from Virginia to South Carolina that would cost nearly $4.5 billion. The proposals include widening parts of the interstate, raising and rebuilding bridges, and repairing pavement.
