THIS WEEK IN THE GARDEN
– Grow your own dried flowers. Plant statice, globe amaranth, straw flowers, for this year’s arrangements.
– Plant ground covers under shade trees that do not allow enough sunlight to grow grass. Mondograss and pachysandra grow well in shade.
– Watering roses with soaker hoses will reduce spread of black spot disease.
– Monitor soil moisture closely. Soil dries out quickly this time of year!
– Mulch around newly planted trees and shrubs. This reduces weeds, retains moisture, prevents damage from lawn mowers, and looks attractive.
– Apply a bit of water soluble fertilizer to newly transplanted flowers and vegetables to give them an extra boost.
– Continue planting trees, shrubs, and flowers, but be prepared to water frequently.
– Always read the label before using a pest control product, even if it’s one you’ve used before, especially at the start of the season.
– Keep spraying your tree fruits with fruit tree spray.
– Hanging baskets and container plants in full sun may need water on a daily basis. check frequently.
