On this date 23 years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act became law. The goal was to guarantee equal opportunity for people with disabilities in public and commercial facilities, employment, transportation, and services at all levels of government. Nearly 57 million Americans have at least one disability. Some 12 million over the age of 15 need assistance with one or more activities of daily living, such as taking a shower or a bath. Over 8 million Americans over 15 have vision difficulties, and another 7.5 million have impaired hearing. There are 3.5 million Americans using wheelchairs, while another near 31 million have difficulty walking or climbing stairs. You can find more facts about America’s people, places and economy from the American Community Survey at <www.census.gov>.

I just had a chance to listen to current(and hopefully former) city councilwoman Sara Coffey’s interview on WIZS 1450 that was done about 2-3 weeks ago. Is it a requirement or do you have to talk out of both sides of your mouth once you become an elected official? No wonder the city of Henderson is the “dump” it is. Too many self-serving officials within your local city/county govt. too be anything but the “dump” it has become. Where are the people who do what is best for the majority of the citizens and not what they are told to do by the minority of the people? Are the words….”Honest Politician” an example of an oxymoron? I thought that the county commissioner who always talks about race was the ‘least capable’ elected official but it seems as if he may have some competition from this councilwoman. Lest you forget that if Bernard Alston hadn’t have gotten his business and his personal situations in dire straights that he would have NEVER lost to her to begin with. How many times prior to Alston’s fiasco did she try UNSUCESSFULLY to unseat him? I know of at least 2 different times that he beat her in the city council race. Would Henderson be better off with some “new faces” around the tables of city/county govt? I think the vast majority of the citizens would say %@#$% Yeah!!!!
Deception, what would be the qualifications of better council persons or commisioners ?
I can personally say that Sara Coffey has served my ward far better that Alston ever did, and both live within walking distance of my home (if, indeed Aston still lives in the house on the hill around the corner). Mary Emma, previous to Sara Coffey, served our ward far better than Alston ever did. Anyone in our ward, who might run against Sara, has reservations regarding the assasination of person that would ensue. It is easy to judge; hard to please once held responsible. I truly do challenge the ‘challengers’ to step up and do the job they say Sara isn’t doing. As the old saying goes, walk a mile in those shoes.I could not begin to fill Sara’s or Mary Emma’s shoes. I am old and flawed.
I do say that if one has a complaint, one must offer a solution. Do you have the solution? If so, why remain anonymous and why not make your solution public and up for discussion? Why not just run for office? Arm chair spectators are everywhere but make no difference at all in the outcome.
Copper…it speaks volumes to the character of a person when within 5 minutes of speaking to them the fact that they are a “lifetime member” of the NAACP comes out of there mouth. She had the nerve to tell someone that within 5 minutes of meeting them to discuss another issue. I was sitting beside him when it happened. Why did she feel as if this mattered? She seemed to think it was important enough to mention it. Wonder what happened to her old man b/c his name was in the Daily Dispatch where he was charged and/or arrested for some crime. I had an elderly gentleman tell me that coffey was one of the MAIN reasons why your HPD Chief Sidwell decided it was time to get out of that dump of a city. Not sure why/how she was a reason but the elder statesman that shared that with me definitely didn’t have any reason to lie. Do you know why Copper? If she drops by for tea……..ask her!! Since you seem to have sooooo much $$$ that you don’t mind your taxes, trash, etc. going up this year due to the current council voting to RAISE them you certainly should be privy to the information.
On a more stately level will someone please tell govenor pat that he is an idiot!!! How much more burden can the low/middle class families continue to carry? The rich are getting richer…..the poor are getting a “kick in the rear end”!! Voter I.D. bill? A JOKE!!! Why not call it what it is…..voter suppression act!!! No more tax free weekends for back to school shoppers? Who do you think this hurts? It’s not the rich/wealthy that are out trying to save a few dollars for back to school supplies!! It’s the low/middle class families who are trying to make it from week 2 week or month 2 month!! If North Carolina doesn’t get this idiot out of office then the good ole’ south will continue to be run by the good ole’ boys!!! If this is a Democracy then I will run for President of the United States of America!!!
Deception, I’m sorry you’re so unhappy. No, I’m not one bit more able than you to afford higher taxes, trash, water or electricity but I haven’t come up with a solution, except to keep track of my budget and my attitude. Just because Coffey is my neighbor, as is Alston, doesn’t mean we have tea together or that I have any special insight. I just know I’m not the only one who voted and not the only one accountable. You are right, though, a person reveals themselves pretty clearly within five minutes of conversation or a few lines of writing.
Deception, why don’t you tell Gov. McCroy he is an idiot besides relying on someone else to do your dirty work.
1 loud mouth…..already did so!!! It was a Monday if I’m not mistaken!! Cost me a Trespassing citation but needless to say that as long as the current govt. is made up of “da rich” then we will continue to “buck the system”!!! NUFF SAID?
Oh….I see. You are one of those people. Well, I can honestly say that I have given more time and thought today than the Governor did on Monday.ALL I NEED TO SAY.
