Friday / Weekend Open Lines

It’s still summer break for many kids, but under way is one of the nation’s largest seasonal events that exchanges leisure for classroom study. It’s back to school time. From nursery school to college, 79 million students are headed to the classroom — that’s more than one-out-of-four of the total U.S. population aged 3 and over. Of Americans between the ages of 18 to 24 years, 42 percent are enrolled in college. Nursery school or kindergarten enrollment is over 9 million. There are nearly 33 million students in elementary schools, and 16.6 million high school students. Getting ready for school this month means buying a lot of new clothes — around $8.5 billion worth.
