Tourism in North Carolina could be particularly hard hit by National Park Services closures. NPR Host Frank Stasio speaks with News & Observer reporter Martha Quillin; and Phil Francis, former superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway about the effect of the shutdown on tourism along the coast and in the mountains.

A delightful lady, who is well into her 80’s and has lived in Henderson all of her life, except when she was in college, recently made an interesting observation. She stated, “Henderson has become a very dangerous place after about 10 o’clock in the morning. On the other hand, it is a pretty nice place to have breakfast.”

These remarks were made after listening to a lady on Town Talk telling us that Ms. Yount did not know what she was talking about on a previous program. The lady on Town Talk was obviously shilling for the Chamber of Commerce and I found her comments to be pathetic and laughable. Ms. Yount was right on target as usual and sadly, the truth sometimes hurts.

My comment was, “It is what it is.”

Royal Rooter doesn’t even know what the Chamber of Commerce is, too funny. Hey, close all those evil businesses down, let the gubment take em all over, right Rooter?

Dagny, I know what the Chamber of Commerce is, having been a member for about 25 years. The point is that too many people associated with the Chamber tend to look at things through “rose colored glasses” and prefer to keep their heads in the sand. Ms. Yount and my 85 year old friend tell it like it is and this rubs some people the wrong way.

I repeat…It is what it is.

    Right on Royal Rooter–.

Henderson’s special use permits will be the death of this area. Coming in a close second –RENTALS owned by a few –they rationalize it as helping poor people–in my opinion.

Rooter, you are bluffing about knowing anything about the Chamber and your statement proves it. “The point is that too many people associated with the Chamber tend to look at things through “rose colored glasses” and prefer to keep their heads in the sand.” The Chamber represents the business community and putting a false spin on the problems in the community has nothing to do with their mission, if anything the Chamber frequently brings unpleasant issues to the forefront of conversation. The lady who spoke out against Mrs. Yount didn’t speak for the Chamber although she is a member, that was a personal response. Again, only in Henderson is the organization that represents the business community smeered, because folks like Rooter and Town Talk Tim are so steeped in the idea that business=BAD, government=GOOD. Why don’t ya’ll stop by the office downtown or learn about what the Chamber of Commerce does for education in the county, a 25 year member would know those things. Mrs. Yount was given a platform to spread ugly rumors and stories that she admitted knowing nothing about and someone rebutted the foolish things she said, why is that “schilling for the Chamber and pathetic and laughable?” Don’t let it scare you that there are people that actually find things to be proud of and that are good in this community.

Dagny, this is my last comment regarding the Chamber. I have belonged to Chambers in 3 different towns over a period of almost exactly 25 years. I no longer belong here since I sold my business a few years ago. I know the mission of the Chamber, however, my point is that in Henderson. quite a few individual members prefer to ignore the negatives and criticize those who point out these negatives. I heard Mrs. Yount’s comments and found no fault in anything she said. The lady (I don’t remember her name) attempted to refute Mrs. Yount’s remarks and, in my opinion, failed. I have heard this same lady extolling the virtues of the Chamber in commercials, and that is her right. I believe that private business is the backbone or any community as opposed to relying on government grants. My final point is this. If the Chamber here has done so much for education, why is Vance County near the bottom in almost every phase of education in NC?

Royal Rooter discussing anything factual with Dagny is wasting your time. Dagny lives in a fantasy land written the Russian exile Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand as did L. Ron Hubbard confused the fantasy world they each created with reality. I do like reading Dagny’s thoughts, it helps me understand the thinking of some in the republican party.

And here is my last comment, Rooter started the whole thread with nasty comments about a lady who dared to disagree with Mrs. Yount, making a case that there are in fact positive things in the community to talk about. Simple as that, but that person needs to be denigrated by Rooter. If you found no fault with someone “repeating stories” for an hour with no solutions and saying ugly, degrading things about everyone and everything in town, including every retail store clerk (and who could blame you, even the host of the show enthusiastically declared “I agree with everything you say!”) that is sick, mentally.
There is a group in town that enjoys the problems in the community because it gives them some kind of power. They would never admit that the liberal social programs they vote for and support are at the root of the problems here and every other town in America that they love to whine about. These programs promote dependance on government and hopelessness and no self reliance and are unsustainable. People turn to the govt to solve their problems instead of churches and local charities. This outlook leads to the crime and break down of families that is destroying society.
There is the real truth about the problems here but it is way easier to rip another person or a town to shreds, giving the ultimate superiority complex rush to the trash talker, than talk about the actual realities of life here. Rooter felt it necesary to inititate the negative conversation, as did Mrs. Yount. A measured and rational response to these attacks is not to be tolerated and must be silenced.
It is what it is, Rooter.
