Best wishes to our wonderful athletes who have devoted so much time and effort to training, and who have sacrificed so much to represent America on the world stage. I am happy to relay information on a great bill that originated in the House this week for our veterans. I was proud to join my colleagues in passing the GI Bill Tuition Fairness Act …
Legislative Update from Senator Richard Burr
On Tuesday, I voted against final passage of the Farm Bill. Not only does it carry a nearly $1 trillion price tag but most of the funding has nothing to do with farming, let alone providing any certainty to farmers. It also fails to include relief to farmers on burdensome GIPSA Restrictions and Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) rules. While I appreciate the efforts of the bill’s authors, its failure to address the crucial needs of North Carolina farmers prevented …

With the April 15th tax filing deadline coming up, watch out for criminals and con artists posing as the Internal Revenue Service to try to win your trust and steal your money. RALEIGH — North Carolina tobacco growers this week have taken exception to a letter signed by N.C. An Open Letter to the Raleigh News & Observer from Senator Richard Burr
Last week, the Raleigh News & Observer ran an editorial attacking the Patient CARE Act, my proposal to repeal Obamacare and replace it with patient-centered reforms of our health care system that are actually affordable. Throughout the editorial, they mischaracterized the proposal, and mislead their readers about the plan and its contents. In an attempt to set the record straight, I prepared a response—a response the News & Observer said they would be happy to run, if the length was …

Monday Open Line
For well over a century, Americans have been smitten with motor vehicles, and new models have long been a point of interest. Our appetite for cars was put on a crash diet this date in 1942 when the manufacturing of private vehicles was shut down for the duration of World War II. The auto companies instead were retooled to build tanks and planes and — of course — jeeps for the GIs. Sedans, trucks and ambulances were also made for …

Friday / Weekend Open Line
It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Nearly 200 years ago, it was even better to light a gas lamp. On this date in 1817, America’s first gas streetlamp was lit in Baltimore, Maryland. The coal gas was supplied by the nation’s first incorporated gas company. Just like today, startups have their struggles, but by 1850, about 50 urban areas had gasworks for mostly municipal and business illumination, along with some private residences. While gas lamps …
