Today is National Bike to Work Day, the exact center of May’s National Bike Month. From coast-to-coast, cycling enthusiasts are expected to take part in a wide range of activities sponsored by environmental and civic groups, health organizations, and police departments. Across the U.S., about 18 percent of the population over age 16 does at least some bike riding during the year, with an estimated 9 million bike trips in the country every day. Even in the face of rising gas prices, the vast majority of us — more than three-quarters — drive to work alone. Slightly over 5 percent use public transportation, and just under that percentage use bikes and other means to get to their jobs. Today, I feel humorous. In that, I hope you all can find the humor in my next comment.
Is there a National Moped to the store day? If so, I can’t tell which day. Every day in Henderson seems to fit that profile, lol.
I call it the daily Moped Parade. The riders represent those who cannot obtain a driver’s license; due mostly to alcohol. Henderson has far more than its share of people who drive drunk, repeatedly.
Lets see if we can get some dialogue going. Here goes:
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO IMPROVE OUR COMMUNITY? WHAT CAN BE DONE, SMALL OR BIG, TO IMPROVE OUR DAILY LIVES IN THE COMMUNITY WE ALL CALL HOME?
Wow. I guess this site is determined to be quieter than I expected it to be. Oh well, such is life. Take care. I’m out.
Mr. O, I just got home from a full day and am recommending that we smile at everyone each day we are out in the world. There is no price for a smile but it certainly does increase one’s face value!
I suggest we, as a parental society, become more involved in our children’s school lives. I am as guilty of this as any of you. I am involved but not as involved as I feel I should be. The school system is only as good as the parental involvement. That’s my suggestion.
Lots of suggestions. Everyone has suggestions and ideas. We need specifics and to get started or you’ll cycle the same suggestions forever. For whatever suggestion you have, list what you can do to achieve this, when can you start, and what specific things do you need to help achieve it. The next commenter, what can you do to help with the previous list?
Mr. Opinionated,
If you want to improve the community you must be involved. I had to get involved to understand the importance of that idea. My involvement may not be how you are involved; it is the involvement that makes representative government work for the people.
I have chosen to personally take the time to read the city and county meeting agendas, read their budgets, attend committee meetings, budget work sessions, and their regular meetings. I will ask questions of the elected and most importantly listen to their answer; agreeing or disagreeing to the answer prevents me from hearing the answer. I sometimes stand before the silent elected and state my view and occasionally I hear or see a response to my view. I invite you to do the same. The only cost it your time. Time I once wasted frivolously.
Mr. Bobbitt, the question was listed as WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO IMPROVE OUR COMMUNITY? WHAT CAN BE DONE, SMALL OR BIG, TO IMPROVE OUR DAILY LIVES IN THE COMMUNITY WE ALL CALL HOME? \
Thank you for your comment on my post. Now, please answer this question for yourself. We all have weaknesses within ourselves as to things we need to improve upon. This was meant as a brainstorm question, to fuel ideas for discussion. Sadly, not many participated. But hopefully, you will keep this going with a suggestion of your own.
Mr. O: I’ll give you my two cents-stop the littering! it seems every morning I have to go out and pick up the fast food bags and trash thrown out in front of my house. It’s getting to the point where I’m considering returning the trash to the stores…loudly. Maybe a local tax can be assessed against McD’s and the Colonel for clean-up.
Very good point. Trash seems to be everywhere on the streets, especially in the county. Can we not utilize prison work force more to do this? Prisoners are able to work and reduce their sentence time by working, so it’s a win/win for all involved.
Opinionated: I would say the 1st thing that needs to be done to improve your community would be to more actively engaged in the local political process. Vance County has way too many career politicians who either can’t see the blight or don’t care about the blight. They also either can’t see the daily Crime or don’t care about the daily Crime. The number of home invasions/murders/strong armed robberies are also pretty alarming. So that’s my suggestion……take it or leave it but I can say w/o much hesitation that if you keep the same ole’ farts in political positions with the same ole’ out-dated ideas and ways of thinking your area will continue to be what it is……..a hub for Crime and Drugs. Good Luck to you.
P.S. Don’t pay your taxes and see how long it takes before they come after you for a payment plan or wage garnishment. Afterwards compare it to the situation of the city council lady and the BOE man and see if the same protocol was followed or were they given “breaks” b/c of the political seats they warm. The irony of the situation is the city council lady is the Preacher at the Church that is delinquent. Talk about a good role model………NOT. Maybe instead of taking up a “love offering” they need to take up a “Pay Taxes” offering.
Too funny! And point well taken Deception. As sad as it is for me to say this, I personally think it’s too late for good old Henderson to rebound. I see a community continuing to plummet downward. Very sad situation. Luckily, I moved to Oxford not too long ago. I sold my home in Henderson and moved to greener pastures. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t care about Henderson anymore. It makes me very sad to see the state of my home town.
Mr. O….well since you moved to Oxford what do you think of the situation with the Granville County Schools and its BOE? It seems that some ‘shady’ business deals took place and an outside agency was brought in to do an audit and it was verified. GCS has an Asst. Superintendent that got a pay raise from 92,000 to 172,000 earlier this year and it was back retroactively back to 2012…..that’s a 80,000 per year increase times 2. Nice check for 160,000 huh? Funny thing is he refuses to comment and refers all questions to his atty.
Also, GCS Superintendent had light shed on his contract and he makes a little over 212,000 plus benefits. Heck they even pay for his business and personal cell phones…..he’s easily getting Granville Co. Schools for 1/4 million dollars yearly. He got called on the carpet by a few of the BofE members b/c evidently they weren’t aware that he was making all that money while teachers are having to keep tabs on how much copy paper they use or they will be reprimanded. If you are interested in local politics/school boards/etc. go to google and type in the name “beamin1” on twitter. You will see he called Tim Farley who is the Superintendent out like noone I have ever witnessed nor read. They got into a lil’ pissing contest and it made Granville County Schools and the GCS Board of Education look like a bunch of hicks. They are calling for him to leave just as his asst. superintendent will do June 30th b/c reports say he will retire. Here’s the question that nobody seems to want to answer………..Why weren’t they charged with “misuse of public funds”? It happens all the time throughout the USA and in some cases the culprits end up behind bars. Stay tuned b/c I don’t think this story is 1/2 over yet……..time will tell b/c they won’t. Here’s a fact on this case though: They have told the former Board of Education Atty. Jim Cross that he is no longer welcome at any meetings………things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I am interested to see where this story goes. I see one of three things, or a combination of them, to occur.
1. They will be required to repay “unauthorized” compensation not approved by the board.
2. They will be criminally charged with a felony.
3. Absolutely nothing.
Which of these do you all think will happen?
Mr. O…..If I were a gambling man I would say that number 3 would be most likely to occur. Also, forgot to mention that the “former” School Board Atty. had recently announced his retirement effective July 1st but when the audit was about to be revealed he was quoted as saying his reason for retirement was the stress of the upcoming audit was taking a toll on his health. Well I’m sure it was if some of the allegations that have been made are true as they seem to be. Also, the interim “new” Board Atty. publicly made the comment that former Board Atty Jim Cross was no longer allowed to attend any Board of Education meetings. Ole’ saying that says “where there’s smoke……there’s fire” seems to apply but nobody wants to explain what the expectations are of the 2 Senior Administrators whom were named in the audit as getting paid LARGE SUMS of MONEY w/o the BofE voting on it.
Keep an eye/ear on it b/c rumor is that it should be “interesting” the next couple of weeks. Too bad kids are trying to prepare for EOG’s and Exams with what was taught this year in crowded classrooms due to “lack of funds”……Well, I guess they didn’t have any funds available after taking those BIG FAT RAISES…….I say shame on both of them. Someone who has the twitter handle beamin1 says that and a lot more to farley. He said they should be tarred, feathered, and run out of town b/c people in his area don’t take kind to folks who steal money from children. The PLOT THICKENS……….
