Christopher Pendergrass, a junior at Northern Vance High School, has been selected to attend the prestigious North Carolina Governor’s School program this summer.
He is the only student chosen to attend the five-week residential program from Vance County Schools.
Pendergrass has been selected because of his outstanding academics in the area of mathematics. He will attend the Governor’s School on the East Campus of the program at Meredith College in Raleigh, June 15-July 23. Students also attend the West Campus of the program at Salem College in Winston-Salem during the same dates.
Pendergrass is the son of Chris and Lisa Pendergrass of Henderson.
The North Carolina Governor’s School selects only the top achieving rising seniors in high school from across the state to attend the summer program and experience enrichment studies in areas including mathematics, English, Spanish, French, social and natural sciences, as well as the arts. It is a program for intellectually gifted high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts and unique courses on each of two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests or grades.
The Governor’s School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas, is located on two campuses of up to 305 students each. The program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children’s Division.
