In this week’s address, President Obama commemorated Memorial Day by honoring the brave men and women in uniform who have given their lives in service to our country. As we stand with our veterans and military families this weekend, the President underscored our commitment to uphold our nation’s sacred trust with our veterans and ensure they get the benefits and opportunities they deserve and have earned.
This week, the President spoke on the importance of raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure, and bringing jobs and tourism back to America; invited the Super Bowl Champion Seahawks to the White House; and designated a new National Monument. The First Lady honored Brown v. Board of Education, and the Vice President and Dr. Biden traveled to Romania and Cyprus.
Friday, May 16
- On Friday, the President and Vice President visited Shake Shack to sit down for lunch with local infrastructure workers.
- The First Lady traveled to Topeka, Kansas to tour the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site.
- Later, the First Lady met with students from Wichita State’s GEAR UP program.
- Following that, the First Lady gave a speech to graduating seniors from Topeka Public Schools.
Monday, May 19
- On Monday, President Obama dropped in on local little leaguers where he threw out the first pitch.
Tuesday, May 20
- On Tuesday, the President met with business leaders as a part of SelectUSA, an initiative that seeks to highlight why America is right for investment.
- Later that day, the President and First Lady participated in a photo shoot and sit-down interview with Parade magazine.
- Meanwhile, the Vice President and Dr. Biden arrived in Bucharest where they toured Otopeni Airbase and greeted local American and Romanian troops.
- Later, the Vice President and Dr. Biden thanked U.S. Embassy staff at a pre-Memorial Day barbeque.
Wednesday, May 21
- On Wednesday, Vice President Biden held a series of bilateral meetings, beginning with the President of Romania at Cotroceni Palace, followed by the Prime Minister of Romania at Victoria Palace.
- Later, the Vice President and Dr. Biden traveled to Cyprus.
- The President spoke to the White House Press Corps on access for veterans to the services and health care they deserve.
- Later, the President hosted the Seattle Seahawks at the White House to honor their Super Bowl victory.
- That afternoon, the President took a walk to the Department of the Interior where he designated the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks Region a national monument.
Thursday, May 22
- On Thursday, the President traveled to Cooperstown, New York, where he spoke about the administration’s travel and tourism agenda at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
- Meanwhile, the White House hosted a dedication ceremony for the Harvey Milk Forever Stamp.
- Later, the Vice President met with Cypriot leaders and Dr. Biden visited the United Nations buffer zone.
