Vance County Schools – Students Selected for HOBY

The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) program has selected three students from Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools to attend its prestigious summer training sessions on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Annabelle Webb and Chris Haywood, both sophomores at Northern Vance High School, and Jhane Palmer, a sophomore at Southern Vance High School, have been selected to attend the nation’s foremost youth leadership development program June 13-15.

Webb is the daughter of Larry and Elaine Webb of Henderson. Haywood is the son of Tracy Jones and Jerome Haywood of Henderson. Palmer is the daughter of Katrina Yancey of Henderson.

Samaria Carter, also a sophomore at Southern Vance High School, was chosen as an alternate for the HOBY program.

Every spring, more than 9,000 deserving high school sophomores from across the country are chosen to represent their high schools in HOBY State Leadership Seminars that take place across the United States. The seminars allow students to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school and community. Selected students attend the three or four-day seminars and participate in hands-on leadership activities, meet leaders in their state and explore their own personal leadership skills while learning how to lead others and make a positive impact in their community. The curriculum is based on the Social Change Model of Leadership and develops leadership based from three perspectives: personal leadership, group leadership and leadership for society.
