Everyone is a potential crime victim, and October is when government agencies, civic groups, schools, businesses, and youth organizations join in trying to reduce the threat. This is National Crime Prevention Month, with special awareness and education events planned across the country. During this time, we are all encouraged to help reduce violence, drugs and property crimes with efforts at three levels — family, neighborhood and community. Suggestions include setting up a neighborhood watch program, making sure streets and individual homes are well lighted, and locking your car. Such efforts supplement the work of the nation’s 780,000 police officers and detectives, and the 652,000 employees of the nation’s 10,000 security guard and patrol services. I paid a visit to the library this afternoon. My last visit was more than a month ago. I wondered why the steel work on the Sam Watkins Memorial Opery House was not completed. I have seen more steel erected on sky scrapers in a day than has been erected in a month on the Opery House. I contacted a structural steel inspector I know and asked why? His answer because of the elevation changes and ramps the steel has to be walked into place. He added very time consuming work.
Is it true the balcony in the Opery House has been eliminated? That would explain why the stairway to nowhere in McGregor Hall (also known as Echo Hall) has been partially dismantled.
MB, Why are you so smug and disdainful of this project? – “Sam Watkins Memorial Opery House” It is paid for with private funds. Why do you denigrate a deceased man who always tried to help this city when there are so few here who take any pride in the community and so few who are willing to get out in front of issues and try to make this a better place to live? Anyone who does this is torn down and criticized. MB, what have you done for the community besides make smart alec, nonconstructive and critical comments after attending govt meetings – as though if only you were running things everything would be Nirvana, kind of like the President did, only it didn’t work out that way…….
