Greensboro made a strong showing four years ago as host of the U.S. Figure Skating Championship, with more than 110,000 attending the various skating events. Add to that 26,000 who attended the free FanFest events outside the main arena, and 25,000 others who watched practices and other events on a second rink. The goal this year – the event is Jan. 17-25 in Greensboro – is to at least match those numbers, if not surpass them. That could be helped in part by an extended schedule for this year’s championships, which adds another day, as well as the inclusion of two younger categories of skaters – juvenile and intermediate – that have the number of competitors swelling to nearly 400 from the 250 who competed in 2011. That’s the case also for FanFest, the collection of booths and fan activities located in the complex’s Special Events Center.
