The addition of college advisors to the staffs at Southern Vance and Northern Vance high schools is proving to be very beneficial to students.
Through a grant program with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the schools each have a college advisor who works with students and their parents in helping them to prepare for college.
During National College Application Week in late November, Austin Dixon, college advisor at Southern Vance, and Vincent Baxter, college advisor at Northern Vance, assisted seniors in completing college applications online.
A record number of over 800 college applications were completed for local high school seniors. This number was especially significant in that during the week all application fees were waived for students, enabling each of the students to save hundreds of dollars.
The more college admission applications completed the more chances students have of being accepted to multiple schools. The seniors should have their choice by early spring of what college they want to attend.
Dixon and Baxter were assisted by school counselors and other staff in working with students to complete the online applications.
