Vance County Schools – ACT Preparations

After school tutoring sessions began this week for 11th-grade students at Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools to help them prepare for the administration of the ACT on March 3.

The after school tutoring sessions will begin for students at the Vance County Early College High School on Tuesday, February 10. Western Vance High School will conduct ACT preparation sessions with its juniors during the school day schedule.

The ACT is used by many colleges and universities for admission standards.

The after school tutoring sessions will be offered through this month to identified high school juniors to assist them in improving their academic skills in reading, math, science and writing. School bus transportation home at the end of each session will be provided to students who need it.

After school tutoring sessions at Southern Vance will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with sessions at Northern Vance held on Mondays and Thursdays. Each session will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The schedule at each school calls for tutoring in a particular subject each week: reading for February 2-6; math for February 9-13; science for February 16-20; and English and writing for February 23-27. The sessions will end on February 27. The Early College High School will follow a similar schedule.

The tutoring sessions at all schools will be led by local teachers.

On February 24 and 25, the school system will sponsor an ACT High School BootCamp at Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools for all juniors. Students who attend Early College High and Western Vance High will be attending a session at either Northern Vance or Southern Vance, depending on where they live. Each high school junior will attend only one day of the BootCamps. The BootCamp sessions will be led by two consultants who will be supported by five or six teachers per session. The ACT BootCamps will last for the entire school day both days and will be held in the schools’ gymnasiums. The purpose of the sessions is to provide students with strategies in each subject area to help them be successful on the test. The consultants also will be giving students tests to access their progress in each subject area.

The purpose of the ACT High School BootCamps and the after school tutoring sessions is to prepare local high school juniors to be as successful as possible when they take the ACT.
