On Saturday, March 7, 2015 Oxford Preparatory School will hold a public lottery for students who have applied for enrollment in 8th – 11th grades in the year 2015/2016. Applications should be postmarked by February 27th for inclusion in the lottery. The lottery will be held from 10 am until 11 am at the Oxford Masonic Home gym located at 600 College St. in Oxford.
Oxford Preparatory School is a public charter school currently in its second year of operation, serving students from primarily Granville and Vance Counties. In the year 2013/2014 the school served only 9th grade students. During that year 40% of the enrolled freshmen took an Advanced Placement course. All OPS students will take an Advanced Placement or VGCC course prior to graduation.
Because the student body of OPS was comprised solely of 9th graders, OPS had only 1 of the 5 report card indicators for the year 2013/2014 – EOC Scores: Math I and Biology. Data indicates that 52.7% of students at OPS performed at or above state proficiency standards on the Integrated Math I EOC as compared with 38% in Granville County, 33.1% in Vance County and 42.2% in Warren County. The results of the Biology EOC are similar, where 54.2% of OPS students performed at or above state proficiency standards. In Granville County 53.7% of students performed at state proficiency standards while only 24.7% of Vance County students and 38.5% of Warren County students were met the state proficiency standard targets.
Students are able to obtain college credit by taking and passing the AP exams. All OPS students enrolled in AP class are required to take the exams. Eligible 11th and 12th grade students with high scores on the ACT, PSAT or SAT will also take classes for which they receive both college and high school credit. In the year 2015/2016 approximately 40% of OPS 11th grade students will be taking college classes.
8th grade students who qualify will take as many as 3 – 4 high school level courses for which they will receive high school credit. In combination with the college classes offered in high school, this places them on a solid track to graduate with at least 1 full year of college credit within a traditional four year high school experience.
All students at Oxford Prep, including 8th graders, are able to take advantage of the wide variety of electives offered. Current electives offered for the 2015/2016 school year include visual arts, chorus, oral communications, Spanish, French, instrumental music, theater, yearbook, and creative writing. OPS also has a wide variety of clubs including a chapter of National Key Club, BETA Club, dissecting club and Student Council. OPS will offer at least 10 varsity teams that will compete in the NCHSAA as a member of the Tar-Roanoke Conference.
