Local business representatives led information sessions for students in kindergarten through fifth grade during the “Career Days” events April 29 and 30 at Dabney Elementary School.
For students in grades 3-5, presenters offering valuable information about future career choices included: representatives from the State Employees’ Credit Union along with their mascot Fat Cat; firefighters from the Vance County Fire Department; Greg Kelly and Kendrick Vann of the Henderson-Vance Parks and Recreation Department; Bobby Austin, a radiology instructor with Vance-Granville Community College; Teresa Floyd, a cosmetologist; the Rev. Frank Sossamon of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church and Michael Putney, an assistant district attorney.
The students in kindergarten through second grade listened to presentations by Kim Pegram, a dental hygienist; Melodie Kernahan, a nurse and director of the Vance Medical Academy at Southern Vance High School; Dr. David Conde, a local veterinarian; Dr. Gary Smith of Four-County Primary Care; Spence Bailey, a college recruiter at Vance-Granville Community College; Deputy Craig Thorpe and Deputy Melissa Elliott, both of the Vance County Sheriff’s Department; Boho the Clown of Henderson/ and Kelly Dennis of the Granville-Vance Public Health Department.
Boho the Clown also talked with pre-kindergarten students and provided face painting activities for all of the students. Second and third-grade students also enjoyed a visit with Chris Wade and Clay Pegram, firefighters with the Watkins Volunteer Fire Department who showed the students one of the department’s fire trucks and explained how it is used to battle fires.
