Students at New Hope Elementary School enjoyed a variety of activities during “New Hope Day” on Friday, May 8 2015. The activities were for all students in each grade level, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
The day’s activities were coordinated and led by members of the Fruit of the Spirit community volunteer organization, which is a close school partner with New Hope Elementary. Bernadette and Vincent Jefferson with Fruit of the Spirit, spearheaded all of the plans for the day.
“New Hope Day” began in the morning with an assembly for students in the multipurpose room during which they listened to speakers discuss the “Let’s Move” campaign championed by U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama. Students were urged to stay physically active at home and at school by going outside as much as possible and participating in sports and games. They also were encouraged to eat healthy foods, especially lots of vegetables and fruits. Speakers shared with the students the different types of foods that are healthier to eat.
In the late morning and early afternoon, students participated in activities on the school’s playground to give them an idea of the different types of things they can do to be physically active and have fun. The activities, as shown in the first two accompanying photos, included ring toss, sack races, relay races, dress-up-and-run challenges, bean bag toss and more.
Fruit of the Spirit also is leading a “Stuff the Bus” campaign to collect donated school supplies for students from the community throughout the spring and summer. The donated supplies will be given to needy students at the start of the new school year.
The final accompanying photo shows third-grade students in the classes of Robin Wilson, standing at far left, and Donna Stukes, standing at far right, wearing “Let’s Move” t-shirts they made for the special day.
