Vance County Schools – Key Club Community Service Project

Men's Shelter Donations

The Northern Vance High School Key Club members have worked hard during most of this school year to complete a community service project to raise funds and purchase items to donate for use by needy families at three public service assistance organizations.

Chris Pendergrass, president of the Key Club, has led the efforts by his fellow members to make valuable donations to Area Christians Together in Service (ACTS), Infinite Possibilities and the Community Partners for Hope Inc. Men’s Shelter.

Several of the Key Club members, accompanied by their advisor Jonathan Seu, a teacher at Northern Vance High, took their donations to the charitable organizations in Henderson on May 27 and 28.

They donated a variety of nonperishable food items to the ACTS House on Chestnut Street, and then clothing and toiletries to Infinite Possibilities, also on Chestnut Street, on May 27. The members followed these donations by giving socks, deodorant, washcloths, toothpaste, toothbrushes and other basic items to the men’s shelter of Community Partners for Hope at First Presbyterian Church on Church Street. At each location, the club also donated cash for additional needs. The club donated $150 each to ACTS and the Men’s Shelter and $250 to Infinite Possibilities.

The ACTS House operates a free, soup kitchen serving lunch to needy people each weekday. Infinite Possibilities provides services for needy mothers and their children. The men’s shelter operates each night during the cold weather months, November through March, offering homeless men a warm and safe place to spend the night. In extremely cold weather conditions, the shelter will remain open 24 hours a day.

The Key Club held a fundraiser at 220 Seafood in Henderson earlier in the year to raise funds for the charitable donations.

There are approximately 40 members of the Key Club who were involved in the donation project.
