On this date in 1831, a baby was born in Knoxville, Georgia who would grow up to invent a product that rather symbolizes America all around the world. John Stith Pemberton was a pharmacist addicted to morphine after using it to treat a wound he received as a Confederate officer in the Civil War. His search for a cure for the addiction, which he never found, led him to create a beverage with a powerful, global attraction. His syrup debuted …
Michael Bobbitt: Notes From The Peanut Gallery (VC BOC July 6th, 2015)
Chairman Taylor gaveled the regular monthly Board of Commissioners meeting to order at fifty-thirty instead of standard six o’clock hour. Vice-Chair Wilder moved to enter into closed session to discuss Economic Development Projects, a Contract Negotiation, and a Personnel Matter. The Chair did not say there would be a formal announcement when the regular session resumed. Speculation can abound the idle minds of those waiting for the doors to re-open. Most waiting in the foyer had a vested interest in …

For freshest peaches, go directly to the source
RALEIGH – July is Peach Month in North Carolina, and one of the best ways to ensure you’re getting a great peach is to buy directly from growers at orchards, roadside stands and farmers markets. “Unlike in other states, the vast majority of North Carolina peaches are sold directly to consumers within a few days of harvesting,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Buying peaches that soon after harvest ensures you are getting a quality, tree-ripened peach that has had time …

When something is proclaimed the best thing since sliced bread, that praise doesn’t encompass as much time as one might think. Sliced bread, wrapped for sale in wax paper, first appeared on store shelves on this date in 1928 in Chillicothe, Missouri. The Chillicothe Baking Company’s innovation of uniform, pre-sliced bread loaves remained local for a short while. By the 1930s, the obvious convenience of satisfactory sliced bread was spreading nationally. In large part, this was due to the Wonder …

The Constitution of the United States, ratified in 1788, somewhat famously made this nation the first in the world to conduct a census of population on a regular basis. Every 10 years, on years ending in zero, in fact. Divisibility by tens had still more and earlier attraction for the Continental Congress, as on this date in 1785, for the first time in history, a nation adopted a decimal coinage system, founded on the dollar we know today. At the …

With freedom comes great responsibility, and the debates in Washington over the past few months continue to focus on issues important to all Americans. From the defense of our nation to the care of our most vulnerable, …
July 4th Open Line
Today is the signature American holiday, celebrating the date in 1776 when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Ours was the first successful colonial independence movement against a European power. Recognition of our nationhood came with the Peace Treaty of 1783. From sea to shining sea, there will be parades, concerts, barbecues, and, of course, fireworks. Among the famous celebrations is the Boston Pops fireworks spectacular, featuring Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” Right around 1812, the median age of …

RALEIGH – Officials with the N.C. Forest Service encourage people to celebrate Independence Day by viewing public fireworks displays rather than risk starting fires by setting off their own fireworks. “Many wildfires that occur during this time of the year start due to the careless use of Class C fireworks such as sparklers, fountains, glow worms, smoke devices and trick noisemakers,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “With many free fireworks shows planned across the state, there are a lot of …
