Raleigh – The resurfacing of the Rogers Road bridge deck in Wake Forest planned for this Saturday has been postponed until Saturday, Dec. 19. The re-scheduling was done to ensure construction work would not impact area residents who want to attend the Wake Forest Christmas Parade, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The bridge resurfacing will help improve the safety and driving conditions on the bridge through the winter and until the structure is replaced next spring. The work involves removing the existing asphalt surface on the bridge and approaches, and putting down new asphalt. The Department has repaired potholes in the deck several times recently and determined this is a more efficient way to keep the bridge surface viable until the replacement project begins.
For the safety of the construction crew, the bridge will be placed in a one-lane pattern with flagmen controlling traffic through the work zone between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, weather permitting. NCDOT reminds drivers to anticipate possible delays and to use extra caution when in the work area.
The Rogers Road bridge is considered functionally obsolete. This means it remains safe but requires more constant and costly repairs. The two-lane structure will be replaced by a five-lane bridge with sidewalks and a pedestrian underpass, with the new bridge expected to be open in the Fall of 2016.
