Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Delivering on Promises

Photo of the Week

Since I first came to office, I have promised the Second District that I would work for a repeal of Obamacare and a patient-centered replacement plan. This week, House Republicans delivered on that promise. On Wednesday we voted to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood. On Thursday, House and Senate leadership signed this legislation and it went straight to the President’s desk.

Weekly Update:
Our first legislative priority of 2016 was to vote on a bill that would repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood.  Because of an unruly Senate, this legislation marks the first time ever that a full repeal bill was sent straight to the president’s desk. As a healthcare provider, we owe it to the American people to provide lower costs and higher quality healthcare. The legislation we voted on, The Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act, will gut Obamacare and reduce our nation’s deficit by $516 billion dollars. A full repeal of Obamacare will put us on a path toward an affordable, patient-centered alternative so that families can be put back in charge of their healthcare.

This week the president made an attempt to restrict our access to guns. As a concealed carry permit holder, I will not allow for him to trample on our right to bear arms. President Obama remains under the impression that he is above the law as he is — once again — working around Congress to demonstrate a flagrant disregard toward our Constitutional rights. Please know that I will not stand for this deliberate attack.

In addition to the legislation of this week, I had a chance to talk to some students from North Carolina and visit with our servicemen and women at a new Fayetteville VA health care center. I hope you will scroll down to view some of the photos.

As always, please call our Asheboro, Dunn or D.C. offices if there is ever anything we can do for you.

The Quiet Work for Constituents
I hope you will take a few minutes and read my full opinion piece as published in The Fayetteville Observer. Included, I detail some of the specific casework we have assisted Second District constituents with over the course of the last year:

“Given that the 2nd District encompasses all of Fort Bragg, it’s easy to understand why veteran matters comprise the largest number of cases we handle. We work closely with veterans to navigate the appointment system at the VA, track down the status of VA benefit claims and ensure the VA has reimbursed veterans for their medical expenses. Over the years, we have helped thousands of veterans and each of their stories is different.

Some of the cases we see have been in the system and working through the process for years before they finally get to us. Just last month, a 91-year-old World War II veteran we have been aiding finally received word that his claim for PTSD had been approved by the VA. His case was first opened in 2008, but he didn’t reach out to us until June of 2012. We kept fighting for him until, finally, we received good news: the VA informed us they had approved his case and he will receive a retroactive payment of over $64,000″

Taking Care of North Carolina Veterans

It was an honor to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday afternoon for the new Fayetteville VA Health Care Center on Raeford Road. This facility is state-of-the-art and will help us to reduce the backlog experienced by veterans who are in need of care.

North Carolina’s veteran population has grown consistently over the last four years at a rate that is about four times higher than that of the national average. We have to make sure our facilities at home are able to keep up with this fast pace. This new health care center will make such a difference in caring for our nation’s finest.
It was so awesome to speak with our servicemen and women at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. As the representative of Fort Bragg, and a nurse, I understand how vital it is that we continue expanding veteran-based healthcare facilities at home. We must ensure that we are meeting our veterans’ healthcare needs in a timely manner.

Talking Healthcare with North Carolina Students

This week I had a neat opportunity to talk to students from Duke University who are studying health policy. We had time to discuss the work Congress is doing to improve healthcare, including our efforts to create long-term sustainability within existing programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

Condolences to Sheriff Maynard Reid

I received sad news this week after learning of the passing of Randolph County Sheriff Maynard Reid, Jr. Sheriff Reid served Randolph County in law enforcement for almost 40 years, first beginning his career with the Asheboro Police Department. We are fortunate to have had such a committed public servant within our community. Please continue to keep the Reid family in your thoughts and prayers.
